A large audience revels as the race ends with the winner finishing a length and a half ahead of the rival Roman Soldier. The crowd, numbering about 51 000, erupts in celebration.
William Woodward’s Omaha defeats 17 rivals in the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. Roman Soldier finishes second, Whiskole takes third, Nellie Flag fourth after early trouble. Crowd near 50 000 roars as Omaha duplicates sire Gallant Fox’s Derby triumph.
Premier Pierre-Etienne Flandin of France and Madame Flandin were severely injured near Auxerre when his automobile collided with another car. Flandin suffered a broken arm and nervous shock while Madame Flandin sustained head and leg injuries and fainted. He was en route to D Arcy Sur Cure to vote in municipal elections. Eyewitnesses said the car was speeding at about 80 miles per hour.
The Japanese economic mission sailed aboard the liner Northern Prince from New York on May 4 to study buying in Brazil. They aim to secure a larger Nippon cotton supply in Brazil as most current purchases come from the United States.
Unemployed Illinois marchers picketed a state relief station in Springfield demanding relief via income tax. Sponsored by Illinois Workers' Alliance with 150000 members, they threaten to target the executive mansion as the legislature debates a $3,000,000 monthly sales tax to secure federal funds. Governor Horne urged Roosevelt for aid.
John L McCarty editor of The Dalhart Texan was elected president of the Panhandle Press Association at the closing session in the Herring Hotel. Harry Koch editor of the Quanah Tribune Chief was elected vice president and Clyde Warwick editor of The Canyon News secretary treasurer.
The Texas Railroad Commission called a state wide oil and gas proration hearing for May 16. It will be the first since the gas conservation act. Gas purchasers were asked to file nominations to help the commission determine market demand.
The state rested late today in the case of S P Darden the World War veteran charged with shotgun slaying of his wife in Greenville. The defense opened its case with 26 character witnesses including five company members from Darden s war service. The boy Jackie Glenn was called to illustrate by the defense.
The bill championed by Marvin Jones has been signed by President Roosevelt, directing funding or action for medical treatment. Details indicate a formal executive endorsement and implementation plan for patient care.
The Panhandle will begin a permanent soil erosion control program with payments of 1.50 to 2 dollars per acre plus the emergency fuel fund. Rep Vito Marcantonio demands Att Gen Homer Cummings prosecute a mob that kidnapped and beat labor lawyer David Levinson and Communist leader Robert Minor in Gallup New Mexico. Enid Oklahoma May 44 A second murder charge is filed against Dr. Guy E. Brewer alleging an illegal operation caused the death of Hermione Fowler a 20 year old Oklahoma A and M College student. He is already held on a similar charge in the death of Mrs Boris Jones. The case references an investigation by Roy Holbird and Trent Robert Huston.
Federal agents detained Sawyer also known as Sea Lion and Harry Sandlevitch near Pass Christian Mississippi after a quiet arrest. He awaits a St Paul indictment copy and faces a probable transport for trial with other alleged conspirators in the 1934 Bremer kidnapping.

Four people died and youngster actor Jackie Coogan was injured when the Coogan car plunged down a roadside embankment 55 miles east of San Diego in the mountains. Victims included John Coogan Sr, Junior Durkin, Robert Horner, and Charles Jones. Patricia Ellis was reported as possibly involved.
A new series of violent quakes hit Turkey as the death and injury toll rises to about 2000 with 1600 houses destroyed. Strong aftershocks, village destruction, and red water flowing through wide crevices were reported across the quake zone.
