Butler Keeps His Ears Open in Tax Plea

Detroit butler George Alfred Smith, 71, settled with the U S government pleading no contest to income tax charges for 1952. He paid back taxes and penalties of 16 469 then received a 36 500 fine. He claimed stock gains may total around 400 000 over a decade from purchases pitched by AT T salesmen in 1924.

Fatal Collisions Leave Four Dead in Panhandle Area

Four people died and 12 were injured in five traffic crashes across Amarillo and the Panhandle Saturday. Dumas residents Irving Deck, Leon Boydston and Marvin Turner perished after a two car crash on FM 2203 near Dumas. Elonzo Earl Wilson died when his car overturned on the Lefors highway near Pampa. Deck, Boydston, and Turner were oil field workers returning to Dumas. two teen passengers in the other car remained hospitalized in Moore County Memorial Hospital, while two others were treated and released. The Dumas victims’ bodies were to be handled by Kirk Funeral Home with services set in Allison.

Herter Signals West Readiness for Berlin Talks

Secretary of State Christian A. Herter returned from Paris and told President Eisenhower that Western powers are ready to open negotiations with the Soviet Union to end the Berlin crisis and begin German unification. He cited successful talks with British French and West German ministers and urged the Soviets to show genuine intent at the Geneva Big Four summit.

Flooding Strikes Palestine East Texas After Cloudburst

A cloudburst drenched the Palestine area with 6.30 inches in about two hours flooding streets and areas near the business district. Water rose 10 feet in low sections while five blocks of stores flooded and highways 69 and 84 were blocked. A reported drowning of a Negro woman was not immediately confirmed as deputies searched five miles south of Palestine.

Steakhouse Injunction Names Heath Furniture and Pullman

Wayne Bagley states Heath Furniture Co and W B Pullman were named in an injunction action as property holders with liens on the Amarillo steakhouse on Pullman Road. The suit seeks to restrain operations alleging gambling use, naming Lester L Davis and W H Wellman as defendants.

Castro Seeks U S Aid for Latin America

Fidel Castro urged the United States to provide 30 billion dollars over ten years to stabilize Latin America and thwart potential social upheavals. He spoke to the Committee of the 21 in Buenos Aires calling for a Marshall Plan style program and warned that constitutional governments could fall to armed minorities without U S backing. The U S delegation gave no immediate reply and may not revisit the proposal.

Texan Tops Cotton List Among Storing Firms

A Texan, Arch Underwood of Lubbock, heads the list of owners of 18 government cotton storage firms. In 1958 his firms received 4,354,996 dollars in surplus storage payments, though the top recipient was Federal Compress and Warehouse Co. of Memphis with 4,447,039 dollars. The payments cover storage costs, not profits, with about 43 cents per bale monthly alleged as the average cost. Other Underwood entities include Panhandle Compress & Warehouse Co. and Union Compress & Warehouse Co. among several others with varying sums.
