President Johnson announced that the YF-12A interceptor, designed by Lockheed, surpassed 2,000 mph on a straight course and 1,688 mph on a closed course at Edwards Air Force Base. Crews included Col. Robert L. Stephens and Lt. Col. Daniel Andre for straight speed, Maj. Walter F. Daniel and Capt. James P. Cooney for closed course.
