Cotton on the brink as rayon cuts into markets

Augusta April 30 Dr Claudius T Murchison president of the Cotton Textile Institute warns cotton may vanish from world markets as rayon and other synthetics rise. He urges unity among industries to adapt through research better merchandising and stronger public education on cotton values. If acted on, he says the era of cotton need not end.

Bridge Parties at Elks Club Ended for Summer

The weekly bridge party at the Filks Club is discontinued for the summer. Mrs Hattie Bliss Amarillo bridge authority announced the move saying parties will resume in the fall. The sessions, taught by W Rufus Steele international card authority, have run weekly at the Elks Club.

Kemp Lumber Co Closes Texhoma Yard and Ships Stock

The Kemp Lumber Co announces the closing of its Texhoma lumber yard on April 30 and will ship stock to other yards in Texas. The firm, one of the oldest in the area, is headquartered in Roswell New Mexico.

Models Will Fly In Air Contest At English Field

The Amarillo Aeronautical Research Club sponsors a gasoline model flying contest at English Field Sunday morning weather permitting. The public is invited to attend and entrants may join the 845 class in the morning. A 25 cent entrance fee applies with winnings distributed among event winners.

Allred Names Delegates to Library Association Meet

Governor James V. Allred appointed delegates to the 60th annual American Library Association conference in Kansas City June 13 to 18. Named were M. M. Harris of San Antonio, Dr. A. W. Birdwell of Nacogdoches, John Gould of Wichita Falls, and two women, Miss Emma Sahara and Miss Fannie Mapeae.

Phillips Civic Plans Shaped for 11-Week Summer Program

The Phillips Civic Club approved a three point activity plan to run June 1 through August 31 for about 400 youths aged 10 to 20 at a cost of $3,000. A minstrel show on May 12 at Phillips High School will raise funds. program includes physical education music art handiwork and remedial scholarship with nine subdivisions under three main points.

Dybenko Removed as Commander of Leningrad District

General P B E Dybenko, long noted as a romantic Bolshevik figure and former Baltic fleet leader, is removed from command of the Leningrad military district. The move, effective for the May Day parade, was announced by his successor Khozin. Dybenko was once married to Alexandra Kollontay and helped train guns on the Winter Palace in 1917.

New Griffith Theater to Rise on Borger Main Street

The Griffith Theater will be built on the Main Street corner across from Panhandle State Bank in Borger. Manager Carl Barber says construction starts in about 30 days after a site change to improve parking. The project aims to be among the Panhandle's most modern theaters.

The Roberts and Olver Lumber Company is erecting a five room frame residence at 2609 Polk Street. J. C. Berry drew the plans and B. R. Gardner is the contractor. Estimated cost is about $5,000 with work set to start Monday morning.
