Peiping abolished the Dalai Lama's rule in Tibet and installed the Panchen Lama while imposing military control. China claimed a two day revolt crush with 4,000 rebels captured though bands remain active. The Dalai Lama reportedly abducted and forced to sign the 1951 treaty, with reports he escaped to join rebels in southern Tibet. The Panchen Lama remains nominal spiritual leader. Navy anti-sub system rated low in secret survey

Washington AP reports that a Defense Department independent survey gave the Navy’s anti submarine system a low performance rating in detecting and tracking nuclear submarines. The finding comes amid growing reports of new Soviet atom powered subs and possible ballistic missile use.
