Government entomologists use parasites from Japan and Korea to curb the Japanese beetle. Tiphia wasp larvae prey on beetle grubs in field releases, with 1,400 colonies liberated since 1921 and many becoming established, though complete eradication is unlikely due to beetle grub dependence.
Amarillo College students oppose war except if the United States is invaded. A minority favored a Japan boycott while about half support optional military training. Neutrality and disarmament views split, with 58 backing a Japan boycott and 99 favor withdrawal from China, 67 backing neutrality act, 46 labeling Japan an aggressor, 33 backing allied action, 6 favor repealing the Oriental Exclusion Act, 117 favor optional military training, 34 favor compulsory training. W. J. Tucker, executive secretary of the Texas Game Fish and Oyster Commission, addressed 170 Panhandle sportsmen urging higher state funding for wildlife conservation. He warned of 542 game and fish laws and urged organization of sportsmen to influence the Legislature. Three people were injured as high winds hit the Wichita Falls area. Damages were about 40000 dollars. Mr and Mrs FE Twitty were bruised when their farmhouse was razed near Dundee 25 miles south. Charles Keys was slightly hurt when a steel plant shed blew down. A room was torn from a house at Mankins near Dundee. Wind velocity about 50 mph.
Police rushed to the Lone Star Bag and Baggage Company plant in Houston to stop a fight as about 50 striking girls tried to halt a truck entering the grounds. Five girls were injured, two severely. The driver, claiming he was taking his daughter to work, was arrested.
The administration asked Congress to authorize an unlimited program of government loans to business and to allow the RFC to buy securities of private firms. The proposal would let the RFC issue long term business loans and lend to states and public agencies for federally authorized projects. Existing limits would be removed and the authority to lend to municipalities would be restored.
A fine mist and very light rain or sleet touched parts of the Panhandle last night. Reports from Adrian to Childress to Tucumcari indicate light precipitation with a mix of rain snow and sleet. Amarillo recorded 0.15 inches of precip with a 32 degree low. forecasters expect fair and warmer conditions today.
Dr Paul Martin Pearson 66 former governor of the Virgin Islands and father of columnist Drew Pearson died at Stanford Hospital in San Francisco after a stroke on Feb 28. His condition had been critical the last two days due to heart trouble and high blood pressure.
