President Truman issued an executive order to investigate loyalty of all federal job applicants and present employees. The plan creates a central master index, loyalty boards, and a loyalty review court, with FBI checks and secret testimony where justified, effective immediately pending Congress funding.

Hidden Hermit Langley Collyer Still Missing in Fifth Avenue Mansion

Langley Collyer, 71, one of New York's reclusive Collyer brothers, is believed hidden in the cluttered Fifth Avenue mansion at 128th Street after Homer Collyer, 75, was found dead in the same house. Attorney John R. McMullen said Langley may still be inside and would be listed as missing if he does not appear soon. Police found unclaimed bank letters on the front stoop.

Mother of Governor Named Texas Mother of the Year

Mrs. George C. Jester of Corsicana is named Texas Mother of 1947. her son is Governor Beaufort H. Jester. The award will be given April 20 at the Driskill Hotel in Austin, with a national nomination announced March 25.

Lovers Charged in Yacht Blast Case in Newport Harbor

Beulah Overell, 17, and her fiancé George Gollum, 21, were arraigned in Costa Mesa on charges of murdering Beulah's parents, Walter Overell, 62, and Beulah Overell, 57, aboard their yacht in Newport harbor last Saturday. Authorities say the victims were beaten with a hammer and the yacht blown by dynamite with a clock detonator.

Royalty to donate Texas fruit to UK hospitals

King George and Queen Elizabeth read a dispatch that 10 cases of fruit from Harlingen Texas would be sent to them. A royal spokesman said they would donate the Texas offering to hospitals in the United Kingdom as thanks for South African fruit and sunshine benefiting the royals aboard the royal train.

All-Time Money Records Topple In Cattle Market

Amarillo’s cattle market set a new money turnover record with sales totaling $956,068 as 9,869 head crossed the auction ring. The Amarillo Livestock Auction Co led marketing, while Panhandle Livestock Commission Co suspended Thursday Sales. Officials expect another heavy run as pens stayed full and stock swelled past previous records.

Subway Ride For Air Crew On XB-36 Bomber

The Army Air Forces described the XB-36 as giant enough to include a "sub way" with a four wheel scooter for crew movement. The 85 foot communications tunnel runs along one side of the bomb bay and is pressurized at high altitudes to allow crew movement without oxygen masks.

John McCarty retires from The News-Globe as assistant publisher to devote full time to writing. He will remain a stockholder and director, with occasional articles in the paper. Amarillo Felon Shot to Death in Huntsville Prison Break

Frank W. James, 22, of Amarillo, was shot dead by guards during a prison break at Wynne Prison Farm in Huntsville as he and four others attempted an escape. Four other convicts were recaptured. James had prior armed robbery sentences from Waco and Fort Worth. Funeral services are planned in Amarillo.

Gifts to the San Jacinto Youth Center totaling 182.50 yesterday raise the grand fund to 2085.50, secretary John Fairey reports. Peace talks amid Amarillo builders dispute drift

Federal housing authorities prepared to meet builders and building tradesmen in Amarillo after faint peace hints. Bill Williams, a federal housing representative based in Lubbock with an Amarillo office, said Louis Tate from the office of labor relations covering seven Southwestern states was in Amarillo. Williams had been in town last night.

Pate Reported Dead Still Lives After Plane Crash

Lt Clyde Pate formerly of Amarillo was said to have died Friday night from injuries in a PT-13 trainer crash near San Antonio. He remained in critical condition at Brooke General Hospital as of last night. W W Angel Jr of Plainview reported the fatality to The Amarillo Daily News, noting the wife at the bedside. Pate had taught a student pilot and worked for Walker Smither Grocery Co before joining the service in 1942.
