The Voskhod 2 spacecraft entered Earth’s atmosphere in a fireball and landed softly in deep snow near Perm. Col. Pavel Belyayev and Lt. Col. Alexei Leonov swam outside the capsule for 26 hours and are under medical supervision as authorities note they overshot target.
Police raids in Saigon uncovered 35 pounds of plastic explosives believed destined for use against a U S installation near the U S Embassy. Two Viet Cong agents were arrested after a scooter attack aimed at parking outside the embassy. The blast near a power transformer wounded a Vietnamese woman but caused no transformer damage. The embassy raid followed the arrest and a search of a house where the owner fled. Police warned of the danger to pedestrians if the timer had not failed.
Civil rights leaders under U.S. Army protection mobilize thousands for a historic 50 mile march from Browns Chapel AME to the state capitol. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr leads the procession while an interdenominational service precedes the five day trek. Earlier attempts led to clashes with police and tear gas.

An Amarillo man, Claude Prather 36, died after a two car crash at NF 24th and the Fritch Highway. Prather, a retired bookkeeper, lived with his daughter Neva Vandiver and had recently moved from Memphis five years ago. His body remained at Schooler Gordon Funeral Directors. funeral arrangements to be announced by Spicer Funeral Home in Memphis. The other vehicle occupants, Dietrich Hiebert 48 of Hooker Oklahoma and his son John Richard Hiebert 12, were in fair condition at St Anthony’s Hospital. Police said the collision occurred at the intersection as Prather’s car headed west on Floyd and Hiebert’s car moved north on the Childress edge. The crash marks the city’s third traffic fatality this year within Amarillo.
President Johnson announced that in the first eight months of this fiscal year the administration spent 1.9 billion less than last year. He cited savings across agencies including the White House and noted total spending for fiscal 1964 reached 62.9 billion by end of February versus 64.8 billion previously.
