Memphis report says Landon V. Butler, a former cotton star turned speculative trader, faced two lawsuits alleging he traded non existent soybeans for about 4.9 million dollars. Once rich from cotton, Butler reportedly rose in soy trading before large losses and legal scrutiny.

Allan Shivers and Amarillo officials issued citations naming him an honorary Texas and Amarillo citizen.

San Francisco police heard Jack M. Love, a 29 year old confessed holdup man, describe his Carmel California robbery two weeks earlier. He said he waited in a liquor store line for customers to depart and outwaited a rival thief before taking $65 from the store owner.
Burglars broke the rear door glass and cut a padlock to take about $168 in small change from money rolls and a bag at the Piggly Wiggly store at 810 N Grand. A separate entry attempt was made at S H Drug, 3805 N E 8th, with no entry gained according to police.
FBI investigators probed suspected sabotage that disabled control equipment on 10 Air Force planes at Hayes Aircraft in Birmingham. President Harry Rowland blamed a labor dispute with CIO United Auto Workers and said devices could have failed after one hour, risking crashes if not found. The CIO denied involvement and condemned property destruction.
President Eisenhower created a new Cabinet rank post and appointed Harold Stassen as special presidential assistant to draft a broad disarmament program. He will study all major weapons including hydrogen and atomic bombs and seek top level and congressional approval for basic policy. He will maintain FDA duties until June before resigning.
Civil Defense Administrator Val Peterson announced a 12 billion emergency fund request to Congress for a nationwide plan to evacuate shelter and feed refugees in 92 critical target cities against H bomb attacks. The study will cover eight to ten million plus metropolitan areas beginning with New York Chicago Philadelphia and Los Angeles. New York will have highest priority.
The House Agriculture Committee issued a 10 page pamphlet backing rigid high price supports for farmers. AFL President George Meany CIO President Walter Reuther and three CIO affiliated union leaders endorsed the statements. Debates on repealing the flexible farm program begin next Tuesday with expected Democratic city voter backing. Committee Chairman Harold D. Cody voiced confidence the bill would pass with urban Democrats.
Amarillo physician Dr. R D Gist was reported in very critical condition at 12:30 a m today at St Anthony s Hospital according to an early morning update from local medical staff.
A six pound ten and a half ounce baby girl was taken from a Beaumont hospital nursery within minutes of birth. A woman in a white nylon uniform and white accessories posed as a nurse and led the mother Mrs George Wharton to the delivery area while claiming a need at the business office. Nurse Helen Mays confirmed the substitution and reported the suspect left with the infant.
A Beaumont woman abducted a baby from a local hospital nursery near the Wharton family. An oil firm employee from Pueblo, Colorado, describes the infant's bassinet as closest to the nursery door and doubts ransom was involved. Authorities have no solid lead and suspect a child craving motive rather than financial gain. Dr. C H Todd notes the mother will be informed in the morning.
House forces seek to topple the Eisenhower farm program with a 90 percent parity support, backed by organized labor for the first time. The move could redraw political lines in Congress, with a key test next week on the basic crops and a dairy floor rise.
Friends of Sir Winston Churchill say he plans to retire within weeks and leave the premiership to Sir Anthony Eden. The reports place Eden as successor with a general election likely in June or October, and Churchill possibly staying on as an ordinary MP and elder statesman.
