Burglars using an acetylene torch broke into the Security State Bank in Anahuac and escaped with about 5000 dollars. Investigators found a large car at the side door and partial loot including gold, cash, warrants, and two government bonds. The cashier Fred C. Mill discovered the loss when opening the bank. evidence of water damage suggests the safe was doused.
Gov. Miriam A. Ferguson appointed C. C. McDonald Wichita Falls T. L. Wynn Athens and D. J. Harrison Houston as Texas delegates to a Washington oil conference on March 27. She will confer with them before departure but not issue instructions. James E. Ferguson noted oil operators in East Texas sought her input though no action was planned.
A fairly strong earthquake was felt in Los Angeles at 12:53 PM. It followed last Friday night’s shocks that caused extensive damage and nearly 120 deaths in a series of more than 40 quakes.
Forecast for Amarillo and vicinity calls for Sunday fair and cooler conditions in the southeast portion. New Mexico shows generally fair weather Sunday with extreme southeast portions fair and southwest/south central portions affected later. Temperature expectations near normal with hourly readings ranging from a low around minus forty to highs near sixty degrees.
Evanston police announce the arrest of Axel Peterson 52 a former Patten Gardens worker and alleged writer of five letters to Mrs James A Patten widow of the wheat king Peterson confessed to composing the extortion letters and was taken to headquarters after a police pursuit near the Patten home Officers said he was unemployed faced an $8000 mortgage foreclosure and admitted the plan.
Odell Chambless aged 21 was sentenced in Fort Worth Texas to five to 33 years in prison for his role in the Grapevine Home Bank robbery. Judge George E Hosey urged him to go to it and be a good boy as Chambless showed only a slight smile during the reading. He had been convicted in criminal district court weeks earlier.
A tornado skirted Opelika's east side injuring three people and causing extensive property damage as small buildings were leveled and larger structures unroofed. A separate Arkansas tornado at Benton destroyed two buildings with damage estimated around $10,000. The storm system moved from the southwest with a heavy rain cloudburst.
Tyler Texas March 18 Garland Addington was sentenced to 25 years in prison for participation in the 3800 dollar robbery of the Arp State Bank on February 16. Immediately after the verdict R B Franklin indicted in a compromise case was arraigned for preliminaries to his trial with a venire of 60 summoned.
In Paris on March 18 the Chamber of Deputies considered a resolution by Rene Richard on paying 19 million dollars in interest on war debts due to the United States after default last December. Government support appeared doubtful with Premier Daladier’s stance unclear while former premiers Herriot Painleve and others pressed for the payment. The movement had tacit government backing.
The League of Nations council unanimously adopted a report condemning Peru's occupation of territory ceded by treaty to Colombia. It demands immediate evacuation by Peruvians. Colombia accepted. Peru urged inquiries instead of adoption.

Fort Worth March 18 Attorneys for Bill Thomas a 99 year murder convict cite a January blizzard that disrupted jury deliberations at the courthouse seeking a new trial. They contend cold weather prevented proper deliberation and filed the application today.
Chinese troops strike Japanese positions near Huerling and Fanchiakow as Major General Hattori’s infantry launch counterattacks. The assault follows a setback at Chiehlingkow where Lieut. Gen. Matsuzaki’s forces seized the stronghold after close combat. Chinese losses reach about 3,000.
A Rengo dispatch reports a Japanese patrol was wiped out by a superior Chinese force near Fanchinkow, with all Japanese killed. The fighting at the great wall passage has continued for days.
An outbreak of terrorism by Chinese against locals suspected of dealing with Japanese firms was reported from Hankow. Anti Japanese societies in Hankow and Wuchang murdered one merchant and kidnapped two others accused of handling Japanese goods.

Three men killed in a Salisbury air port crash late today were T. C. Pridgen Jr., his brother Cecil Pridgen, and Emerson Faggart, all residents of Salisbury.
Clarence E Forbes aged 42, a World War II veteran and airplane pilot, and Miss Pearl Fraser aged 27, a school teacher, were shot and killed in a Spokane hotel last night according to police reports.
Premier Benito Mussolini and British Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald held their first Rome talks on disarmament and a five year arms reduction plan. MacDonald arrived with his daughter Ishbel as Genova’s fanfare greeted the visitors.
The deadline for turning in hoarded gold has been extended indefinitely. Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago was notified by Washington authorities on March 18.
In Fort Worth on March 18 a pursuing man chasing a gun toting bandit was struck when the bandit fired a shot that shattered a fruit jar under the pursuer’s arm. Fragments and spilled liquid alerted officers, and the pursuer became the pursued before police captured the bandit nearby.
Cone Johnson 72 a veteran of Texas politics and state affairs will be buried in Tyler with services at Marvin Methodist Church at 3 PM led by Rev G G McKenney. Honorary pallbearers include Tyler Chamber of Commerce members. Johnson died last night after illness ending his term on the Texas Highway Commission. He was born in Dawsonville Georgia June 11 1860 and had two marriages.
The Duke of Abruzzi, cousin of King Victor Emmanuel and noted explorer, died at 2 am in Mogadishu Somalia after three weeks of seeking recovery from arteriosclerosis. He received a telegram from Admiral Lilianie, minister of marine, expressing the navy’s support.
Treasury receipts for March 16 totaled 86,453,188.00 with expenditures of 74,130,183.87 and a balance of 457,238,651.64. Customs duties for 16 days of March amounted to 4,422,064.41.

Judge J D Moore ruled Frank L Denison cannot serve on the state highway commission as the Texas Senate did not consent to his appointment and the governor's commission was issued without authority. Denison faces ouster with an appeal planned by his lawyers.
