Olive K. Dixon longtime Panhandle historian and widow of Billy Dixon died at 7 p m after a coronary while returning from dinner with her daughter and son in law G W McKee in Amarillo Texas She was 83 born in Roanoke County Virginia and wrote for the Globe News The Life of Billy Dixon and many Panhandle Plains materials Funeral services are pending and she lived with her son A K Dixon at 808 Jackson Missouri Valley area.
A 17-year-old construction worker Marvin L. Crow of Odessa was killed when a truck backed over him while he placed a skid across a ditch during gas line work east of Spade. He worked for Bo Moore Construction under Pioneer Natural Gas Co. contract. The accident happened about 714 miles east of Spade. The body lies at Hammons Funeral Home in Littlefield.
Robert Sumner, 45, of Borger, a driver for J. A. Robinson & Sons Trucking, was fatally electrocuted when a 16 foot high 500 barrel steel tank he was hauling touched a 13 000 volt overhead line seven miles east of Borger. James Stevens warned him, but Sumner touched the charged vehicle and was burned beyond recognition. Stevens and company owner Pop Robinson described the fatal mishap as his body burned near the truck. services are pending at Minton Funeral Home.
Randall County Sheriff L. S. Johnston leads a manhunt after a 30 year old victim with 14 stab wounds is found near Highway 87 West in Canyon. The unidentified man wore jeans and a plaid shirt and had a white gold wedding band.
Phil Silvers won three Emmys including best actor and best comedian for Youll Never Get Rich. Nanette Fabray and Perry Como also swept multiple awards. Mary Martin and Lucille Ball earned top acting honors, with The $64,000 Question and Disneyland rising with audience wins. About 4,500 attended the ceremonies in Los Angeles and New York.
Washington March 17 The push by Senator Price Daniel to decide on a Texas gubernatorial bid is to be aided by mail. By Saturday afternoon about 15 243 requests to run and 6 000 letters yet to be opened were counted as the 25 000 goal neared. Daniel’s wife said the target would likely be reached soon. He flew to Brownwood to accept an honorary degree from Howard Payne University. Daniel also received 91 letters urging him not to seek the governorship and 33 recommending he stay in Washington to finish his Senate term.
A ferocious early spring storm with 79 mph winds dumped heavy snow and sleet from Virginia to Ohio and into Canada, killing 62 people across Massachusetts New York Rhode Island Connecticut New Jersey Ohio Pennsylvania Maine Maryland and New Hampshire. The system halted travel stranded motorists and disrupted shipping as civil defense and police coordinated rescues.
A man and a woman died when their car was struck by Santa Fe freight No. 239 at the Eastern Street crossing. The car, dragged about a half mile, was found crushed with bodies taken to St. Anthony's Hospital. Conductor Amos Smart, engineer M L Johnson, and brakeman Cliff Theil gave accounts. The incident occurred around midnight after 11:50 p.m. in Amarillo.

Fred Allen, famed radio television and film comedian, collapsed on a sidewalk near 171 West 75th Street and died shortly after midnight. He was 61 and had just left a party at Dr. Milton Berliner’s midtown apartment. Born John Florence Sullivant in Cambridge Massachusetts on May 31 1894, Allen rose as one of the era’s top satirists.
