Germany ups army size as Hitler proclaims peacetime conscription

Berlin reports Germany will expand its regular army to between 325,000 and 480,000 with 12 corps under a decree for compulsory military service. Hitler told Britain’s ambassador the army could reach 500,000, citing European rearmament and Versailles Pact violations as justification.

Two Post Men Face Charges In Texas Slaying

In Garza County, Oliver H. Kitchen and W. G. Hamilton were indicted on narcotics and liquor trafficking charges connected to the death of Federal Narcotic Agent Spencer Stafford. Kitchen pleaded not guilty and posted a $1,000 bond to stand trial May 6. The case ties to Sheriff W. F. Cato and others from Post, Texas.

Centennial profits to memorial at Dallas fairgrounds

All profits from the Texas Centennial Central Exposition will fund a Dallas memorial marking 100 years of progress. The Fair Park Board approved plans to transform the State Fair grounds into a new exposition site, with efforts to accelerate legislative approval for the Centennial appropriation to start work on the fair buildings.

State expects to prove case without aid of confession

Five witnesses will testify as the George S. Hamlin murder case opens Monday. Subpoenas were issued by District Clerk Ben Smith at defense attorney E. T. Miller's request. L. D. Lewis, elsewhere, was subpoenaed but not yet served. he is in Mississippi. Others named include H. G. Jones, J. W. Barron, J. W. Gilliam, and Mrs. Cordelia Gall. Gilliam must bring a telegram from Mrs. Dan Boyles of Jackson, Mississippi to Lewis in Amarillo.

Memphis Pioneer David Grundy Dies After Stroke

Funeral services for David A. Grundy aged 72 are set for Sunday in Memphis. A Hall County pioneer for 45 years he co owned and sold much of the 118000 acre Shoe Bar Ranch. He served as Hall County clerk and was a 32nd degree Mason. Survived by his widow and son Robert A. Grundy of McKinney.

Soil Erosion Experts To Aid Plains Program

Soil and wind erosion specialists from the Southwest will attend a 51 county conference in Dalhart called by the Dalhart Chamber of Commerce. Flood cracks more levees along St Francis River

United Press reports the St Francis River flood spreads through Southeast Missouri and Northeast Arkansas with eight additional levee breaches at Piggott Arkansas and Cantwell Missouri. Six Cars Stolen From Clovis Man In Six Years

Carl Osborn a Clovis merchant says he may be the unluckiest man or a target of revenge after his sixth car theft in six years. The 1933 maroon Chevrolet Sedan was stolen from in front of his store and vanished within an hour with no trace found. Officers note the motive may be revenge for Osborn helping send several men to prison for stealing his cars or dealing in stolen goods. He has recovered all prior vehicles but each was badly damaged.

Tetanus Fatal to Attorney Elmer Slough

Elmer Cum ming Slough prominent Amarillo attorney and member of Slough & Slough died early Saturday from tetanus contracted from a minor finger cut two weeks earlier. Death occurred at 9 15 at his home 1925 Harrison. He was 31 and a Oklahoma University law graduate of 1926. Survived by parents and a sister Lena Maud Slough, all of Amarillo.

Young Man Fends Off Lynch Mob in Uniontown

A 23 year old Theodore Caranelli barricaded himself inside his home and a barber shop in Newell near Brownsville to repel a mob of about 200 people bent on lynching him. State police arrived to take him into custody after he held off for over two hours amid rumors of an attack on two girls. The crowd urged tar and feathering as Caranelli cried his innocence through a door crack.

TWA Sets Record For Schedule Flight

Trans continental Western Air Transport record flight from Los Angeles to New York with nine passengers aboard a Douglas airliner. The trip took twelve hours and ten minutes, despite a one hour Pittsburgh delay, at an average of 225 mph to Kansas City and about 300 mph from Tucumcari to Kansas City.
