More than 70 thousand U.S. children lacked insurance in 1996. Texas accounted for about 5,000. The study notes 14 percent of American children were uninsured in 1997, with many in the South.

Pregnant ex teacher jailed for rape may face new charges

Mary Kay Letourneau, 36, serving 7.2 years for a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old boy who fathered her daughter, is about six weeks pregnant. Her lawyer David Gehrke, at his Seattle area home, said she did not name the father, but suggested it could be the boy. If correct, she could face additional criminal charges.
