Dallas AP reports Jack Ruby received the death penalty for the murder of Lee Harvey Oswald. Prosecutor Henry Wade hailed the verdict as fair, while defense chief Melvin Belli labeled the trial a kangaroo process and vowed appeals.
In Childress on March 14 Alvis Payne a five year old mascot for the Panhandle Firemen's Association phoned in a fire alarm from Miss Sophie Adams's home where rugs caught fire. He felt like a failure for not recalling the fire department number though his grandfather Alvix Maddox is Childress Chief of Police.
U S District Judge Frank Wilson overruled Hoffa and three co defendants motions for new trials. Wilson also scheduled March 30 Nashville trial for Lawrence Medlin linked to the scheme. Sentences of three years were imposed on Parks Campbell and King.

President Johnson plans a major poverty program request to Congress after delays and interdepartmental skirmishes. Sargent Shriver will coordinate anti poverty efforts while keeping his Peace Corps role. A lower draft registration age is considered but not guaranteed.
