Governor Price Daniel will dedicate a granite monument Wednesday at a Palo Duro High School corner honoring Josiah Gregg and the 1849 Fort Smith Santa Fe Trail drivers. The tribute recalls gold seekers journeying through a barren expanse as the route crossed the land in 1849.
A dedication ceremony at Palo Duro High School marks the Josiah Gregg Memorial Monument honoring the Palo Duro Youth and Forty Niners spirit. Speakers include Robert Echols and W. W. Nicklaus with participation by the Will Rogers Range Riders and local officials.
A 17 year old Amarillo youth, Lucies Ivory born April 23 1942, died after a cement mixer struck him at 3rd and Van Buren as he crossed. The driver Carl Delano McLaughlin 24 said the youth darted into the street. Ivory attended Carver High School and survived by his mother Mrs Sa matha Dowd, father Theo Ivory, six sisters and three brothers. Funeral services will be announced.
In Havana, two American men, congress candidate John R. Taylor and TV news director Roger Sharp, were seized by Cuban police and held for ten hours of questioning. They were interrogated at the Fidel Castro Revolutionary Army Investigation Department, stripped and searched, denied embassy contact, and later released. Police also seized film, cameras, credentials, and papers from Sharp.
The Los Angeles jury failed to reach a verdict after eight days of deliberation on whether Dr. R Bernard Finch and his mistress Carole Tregoff murdered his wife. A retrial is ordered with a hearing set for March 17 and a new date likely in late April.
About $5,000 in merchandise and $150 cash were taken from Heard and Jones Drug Co in Tulia. Watches, rings, cameras, binoculars vanished while the robbers rifled the safe area. Other nearby break ins caused mainly machine damage and minor losses. no arrests by Saturday afternoon.
A deadlocked jury after eight days of deliberation found Dr. R Bernard Finch guilty of second degree murder by a 10 to 2 vote. The panel acquitted his mistress Carole Tregoff by an 8 to 4 count, with two jurors clashing over the law interpretation.
The jury split 10 to 2 on Dr. Finch murder and 8 to 4 on Tregoff charges, failing to reach verdict after nearly 40 hours. The case draws national attention as Barbara Jean Finch’s body was found eight months earlier and expectations of a retry loom.
Fred Blevins, a mountain farmer from Whitetop, Virginia, trudged 7.12 miles through six to seven foot drifts to reach a National Guard unit after the entire community of about 30 families and its food supply was cut off for four weeks by heavy snow. The guard vehicle was hindered by snow on the road as it attempted rescue.
