U S servicemen in South Vietnam report shoddy arms and ammunition shortages while some items appear at Saigon markets. An adviser says Soviet clips outperform U S ammo, jamming U S weapons. Fighting continues near Da Nang as rumors of a coup brew in Saigon.
A chipped White House dinner plate missing for about 60 years was returned and placed in the glass-enclosed Lincoln china display. Nicholas G. Morgan Sr., an 8-year-old attorney from Salt Lake City, mailed the plate to President Johnson and explained its disappearance during Theodore Roosevelt’s administration when James Morgan visited the White House. Roosevelt allegedly selected and passed a plate to Morgan, whose relatives later preserved the anecdote.
A canvas bag with 40000 vanished from Brink's armored truck during its rounds to three Philadelphia banks. Police and Brink's say the bag fell to the street after a brief stop while a 1961 Los Angeles loss is noted for comparison. No clues yet as investigation continues.
Chinese and Vietnamese students marched on the Soviet Embassy in Peking to denounce Moscow police actions during a Moscow anti-American demonstration. The New China News Agency said protesters delivered a letter to Soviet diplomats and pressed for an official apology.
An 80 year old Newark man William Brown fought a robber at the Perfect Dice Co. scene. Brown drew a .38 revolver firing twice, wounding the bandit in the jaw and teeth as the suspect fled. Police later detained a second man injured by the mouthful of bullets.
Police raided a ring that targeted tourists in Mexico City arresting thirty three men accused of posing as licensed guides. Investigators say the group worked with taxi drivers and prostitutes to lure male visitors to nightlife venues, serve doped liquor, and rob them, including two Americans who lost about 350 dollars.
A group led by Eddie R. Neal 23 and including Helen Hollings 19 was arraigned in Criminal Court on assault conspiracy and weapons charges after a weekend plan to take over the city led to as many as 25 robberies. Bail ranged from 2,500 to 15,000 with hearings set for March 15.

The Defense Department reports 3500 Marines to be sent to Da Nang to relieve South Vietnamese forces and strengthen air base security. In Selma Alabama a hostile white crowd thwarted a planned 50 mile march to Montgomery as Gov George Wallace halted the Negro rights protest citing traffic and safety concerns. A male suspect faced disorderly conduct charges while a protest organized by Concerned White Citizens of Alabama drew professors and professionals to oppose the march. Police identified a body in Montevideo linked to a Nazi slaying case with ties to Latvian born Herbert Cukors.
