Moore County sheriff's office investigates the death of a full term newborn found about 3 p.m. yesterday in a portable chemical toilet near Lake Meredith. The six pound infant, wrapped in a February 28 Amarillo newspaper, was pronounced dead by Justice of the Peace Billie Faye Schumacher. The baby was taken to Morrison Funeral Home in Dumas. Sheriff Buck Weaver said there are no further leads.
The Texas Railroad Commission reports 2390 barrels of crude oil were officially missing from Panhandle wellheads last year. Authorities estimate unreported losses run into thousands of barrels at 10 to 11 dollars per barrel. The Panhandle Producers and Royalty Owners Association offers a 2500 dollar bounty for information leading to felony convictions, in efforts to curb theft amid a long running oilfield theft problem.
