In Amarillo the Palo Duro Dons claimed the state Triple A basketball championship at Austin. Teenagers and residents celebrated with horns and a car parade down Polk Street, praising the first season champions who fooled the experts. Mayor Jordan expressed pride in the city’s honor.
Mayor Art Jordan proclaims Monday as Palo Duro High School Day and plans a civic celebration for the championship Dons. A police honor guard will greet the team on arrival near City Auditorium with officials from the city, school, Chamber of Commerce and civic groups. The team departs Austin at 10 this morning and is due to arrive tonight.
