About 3000 girls from 38 Panhandle and South Plains counties attended Area I of the Future Homemakers of America annual meeting at Municipal Auditorium in Amarillo. Officers were installed including Jerry Gregory of Petersburg as president and June Johnson of Slaton as vice president. The Rev Taft Holloway gave the keynote speech drawing on The Three Little Pigs to outline homes with straw sticks and bricks and their cultural religious and financial foundations.

Seven in Family Die in De Kalb Fire
A two story frame house fire in De Kalb New York killed farmer Lloyd Van Ornum 44 his wife Geneva 44 and five of their 12 children Donald 18 Carol 11 Fern 9 Lionel 8 Laurel 3. Two children were away at the time and a house guest survived. The blaze started from a red hot stovepipe and destroyed the home near the Canadian border. Other survivors include Lloyd Wayne 23 James 19 Alberta 15 Albert 14 Jane 12 Joyce Barden 15. Miss Barden is Lloyd Wayne s fiancee.
