In Austin on June 26 lawmakers departed after a lengthy special session called by Governor James V. Allred to curb public gambling. The body repealed legalized horse race gambling, outlawed dog track betting, tightened anti bookmaking statutes, and kept state control of jacks and stallions funded by racing proceeds. The assembly also failed to align dove hunting laws with federal rules and considered pension cuts, leaving many local bills alive and minor anti gambling measures to die.
Funeral services will be held in Dallas for Claude Dobard 57 a retired Texas League baseball player who died here Friday night Dobard retired in 1922 and death occurred six days after his retirement month not specified obituary notes his long career and place of death.
Sunday partly cloudy with likely showers from the extreme west portion. West Texas area forecast calls for partly cloudy skies with showers possible. New Mexico expects showers and thunderstorms Sunday. Temperature readings from Amarillo show highs around the low 80s and overnight lows near 70s to mid 80s.
Bernice Felton, an 18 year old from Rockford Illinois, was acquitted of a murder charge in the Victor Gates case. She and her father left town after the verdict following a warning from Lonoke officials who said many townspeople questioned the outcome. Lester Brockelhurst was sentenced to die in the electric chair for the same incident.
Young Democrats of Texas approved Roosevelt administrative reorganization and praised Cordell Hull for world peace efforts at their two day convention in Houston. They urged a state legislature to create a Public Utility Commission and debated law enforcement before rejecting a proposal to limit Ranger deployments.
Treasury officials said they will ask Congress in 1988 for a thorough tax overhaul to create a flexible system. Rates could vary yearly with conditions, while eliminating inequities and closing revenue leaks. In San Francisco on June 26 Frank Reed, 51, a lawyer and WPA instructor, was found impaled on an iron bedpost in his apartment. Police said it appeared an accident as the door was locked and no intruder could have entered. Reed muttered torture and ransom before dying. Coroner and police noted he had been drinking.
Whitley King an 11 year old of Roanoke Denton County died from burns after a pressure cooker exploded at his father Fort Worth policeman Frank King’s farm home. The blast also burned his brother Burnett 13 who helped prepare vegetables and the father was severely burned while aiding them. Burnett received serious burns and was treated.
In Vinita Oklahoma the State Board of Affairs ordered sterilization for 47 inmates of the Eastern Oklahoma State Hospital after a hearing. Superintendent Felix Adams stated the inmates' names would be withheld. The board left for Lake Spavinaw to spend the weekend.
Austin reports that about 15,000 people may be removed from the old age pension rolls by August under a tightened eligibility review. John Wallace of the Board of Control said 5,000 could be cut in July and 10,000 more in August, with July payments averaging 13.50 and June payments at 13.74. Officials noted May rolls peaked at 129,805 recipients and forecast July and August rolls at 122,000 and 112,000 respectively amid rising revenue needs.

Deputy Sheriff reports tenant farmer T A Murphy captured after a gun fight at Offield farm in La Salle County. Murphy held J F Offield's wife and son overnight, attempted $500 ransom, rifle jammed, all four men armed but no one wounded.
In a county pursuit officers captured Bob Holley 41 of Lewisville fleeing East Ham Prison Farm. Paul Rhodes 33 of Lufkin and eight other fugitives remained at large as lawmen spread bloodhounds to flush them from pine country near Glen Rose and Huntsville.
Memphis area received an estimated half inch shower Saturday evening easing heat and aiding raw cotton crops. Across the Plains thermometers fell with a cooling north breeze. Amarillo topped at 88 degrees, the lowest in days.
The Parsons family says Mrs. Alice Mc Dowell Parsons, a Long Island society matron, has no mental illness and they still believe she may be alive. They support ongoing federal and local inquiries and deny rumors she is returning to the farm house. An ad in a Daily Mirror Personal Column denying ransom negotiations was published.
NACOGDOCHES June 26 J H Hood 24 Jefferson died today from severe burns after his coupe struck a lumber truck near here, overturned and burned. Hitchhiker William Howard 19 who rode with Hood at Lufkin was killed instantly. Frankie Taylor 17 Austonia near Crockett sustained a neck injury.
In Edinburg a criminal district court jury convicted former Mercedes officer John Parks of the 1935 slaying of Frank Beale and sentenced him to four years in prison. Parks had twice been tried before, first a hung jury and then a reversal of an eight year term, with a motion for a new trial filed immediately.

In Lordsburg New Mexico on June 26 two widowed sisters were shot in their home before four children. A wide search began for Jesus Romero a former convict with a history of slayings in Arizona and New Mexico. Sheriff John Cavin described Romero as 41 and linked him to threats against Martina Navarro who had fled Romero.
