Legislators On Way Home From Texas Special Session

In Austin on June 26 lawmakers departed after a lengthy special session called by Governor James V. Allred to curb public gambling. The body repealed legalized horse race gambling, outlawed dog track betting, tightened anti bookmaking statutes, and kept state control of jacks and stallions funded by racing proceeds. The assembly also failed to align dove hunting laws with federal rules and considered pension cuts, leaving many local bills alive and minor anti gambling measures to die.

Bernice Felton Freed by Jury in Arkansas Case

Bernice Felton, an 18 year old from Rockford Illinois, was acquitted of a murder charge in the Victor Gates case. She and her father left town after the verdict following a warning from Lonoke officials who said many townspeople questioned the outcome. Lester Brockelhurst was sentenced to die in the electric chair for the same incident.

Young Democrats Back Roosevelt Plan and Hull Praise

Young Democrats of Texas approved Roosevelt administrative reorganization and praised Cordell Hull for world peace efforts at their two day convention in Houston. Man Impaled on Iron Bedpost in San Francisco

In San Francisco on June 26 Frank Reed, 51, a lawyer and WPA instructor, was found impaled on an iron bedpost in his apartment. Police said it appeared an accident as the door was locked and no intruder could have entered. Reed muttered torture and ransom before dying. Coroner and police noted he had been drinking.

Fort Worth Youth Burned Fatally

Whitley King an 11 year old of Roanoke Denton County died from burns after a pressure cooker exploded at his father Fort Worth policeman Frank King’s farm home. The blast also burned his brother Burnett 13 who helped prepare vegetables and the father was severely burned while aiding them. Burnett received serious burns and was treated.

Sterilization Ordered for 47 Inmates at Eastern Oklahoma Hospital

In Vinita Oklahoma the State Board of Affairs ordered sterilization for 47 inmates of the Eastern Oklahoma State Hospital after a hearing. Superintendent Felix Adams stated the inmates' names would be withheld. The board left for Lake Spavinaw to spend the weekend.

Perkins Suggestion Spurned Pension Roll Cuts Expected

Austin reports that about 15,000 people may be removed from the old age pension rolls by August under a tightened eligibility review. John Wallace of the Board of Control said 5,000 could be cut in July and 10,000 more in August, with July payments averaging 13.50 and June payments at 13.74. Officials noted May rolls peaked at 129,805 recipients and forecast July and August rolls at 122,000 and 112,000 respectively amid rising revenue needs.

Policeman John Parks Slaying Conviction Upheld

In Edinburg a criminal district court jury convicted former Mercedes officer John Parks of the 1935 slaying of Frank Beale and sentenced him to four years in prison. Parks had twice been tried before, first a hung jury and then a reversal of an eight year term, with a motion for a new trial filed immediately.
