Lester Payne 20 faced assault charges after beating W. W. Jackson chairman of the State Board of Education in a Midland motel. Jackson, hospitalized in good condition, said Payne attacked him as he returned to his room after a board meeting. Army doctor Levy sentenced after refusing to train Green Beret medics

UPI reports Capt Howard Levy a Brooklyn born dermatologist and Army medical officer was dishonorably discharged and sentenced to three years hard labor for refusing to train Green Beret medics for Vietnam and for advocating disloyalty. The verdict came as Pvt Andrew Stapp received a 45 day sentence for denying access to leftist literature. Levy was taken to Ft Jackson stockade and awaits transfer to Leavenworth. The court martial lasted 2 hours 26 minutes and the defense cited ACLU counsel Charles Morgan Jr.
