With less than two weeks to go, the convention faces intense battles as factions clash over key issues and leadership, signaling a heated political forum ahead. The outcome hinges on party unity as delegates prepare for crucial votes and public sparring.
Washington June 2 The Republicans sharpen efforts toward the Kansas City convention where bitter animosities and looming rucksus before and during balloting are predicted. Rival managers claim strength for their candidates amid factional farm relief disputes as Hoover's lieutenants brace for the showdown.
Fifty midwest farmers led by M. J. Tobin of Vinton Iowa form a committee to draft a farm relief plank for the Republican platform. The proposal, backed by James E. Watson Ad am McMullen and George Peck, will be reviewed three days before the Kansas City convention opens June 12. Tobin says the group operates independently of Frank Lowden and his McNary Haugen emphasis.
Predictions say the commerce secretary could fall short on the first ballot though supporters claim about 700 first and second choice votes. A 545 delegate majority is needed, with Hoover staying in Washington as rivals led by Lowden push to block his nomination. Lowden, second in delegates, built strong backing from influential Republicans.
Sunday forecast calls for fair and warmer conditions in Amarillo and vicinity and generally fair, warmer weather across West Texas and New Mexico. In Alexandria Louisiana on June 2 a mob of 20 to 25 seized two prisoners Lee and Dave Blackman from officers transporting them from Leesville toward Shreveport and shot them to death near Boyce. The Blackman brothers were linked to a prior killing of Deputy Sheriff J Frank Phillips near Long Leaf.
The monoplane Southern Cross landed at Barking Sands Kauai from Wheeler Field Honolulu to prepare for a flight to Sydney via Suva Fiji Islands. Co pilot Charles Ulm announced plans to hop off for Suva at drybreak Sunday before leaving for Kauai.

Roy McNeely of Lubbock County, sentenced to two years for burglary, was granted general parole by order of Governor Moody. The parole decision follows McNeely’s claim of providing for a wife and six children.

Memphis June 2 Two fine milking Shorthorn heifers were received this week by E M Ewen Son and placed on their ranch southeast of Memphis. The grandmother of one heifer once held the world record with 18 075 pounds of milk and second in butter fat, signaling growing interest in pure bred stock among local farmers and stockmen.
Junita Bear a 98-year-old Ute squaw lies on rags in her Pagosa Springs hut as the Ute Indian dance festival teeters on postponement if she dies. Dozens of squaws chant to ward off evil spirits while medical help remains unavailable. The celebration honors Chief Ouray.

In Montreal a three year old addicted to cigarettes was blamed by his mother for a house fire last Wednesday. Mrs Henry Lamarche testified to the Fire Commissioner that parental efforts to keep the boy from smoking failed, while an insurance representative warned insurers won’t cover such neglect.
The Senate presidential campaign investigating committee closed a two day hearing in New York noting Tammany Society contributions to Alfred E. Smith's 1932 campaign were zero. Witnesses reported Smith supporters and Wall Street sentiment favor Hoover. Committee figures showed receipts and outlays tallied at 121 701 with the largest single gift of 10 000 from Percy Strauss of Macy & Co. A later exchange with Oscar Miller limited his testimony to known facts. The committee planned further hearings in Washington on Monday.
E T Meredith longtime Iowa publisher and former secretary of agriculture in the Wilson cabinet is critically ill at his Des Moines home his personal physician said. He is reported to be suffering from high blood pressure and related complications after a recent return from Johns Hopkins Hospital Baltimore where he had been under observation.
Don Riggs and Herbert Canada, both about 35, employed by Golden Eagle Oil, were killed when a gas well fire trapped them atop a 112 foot derrick at the Big Gasser near four corners southeast of Fritch. The accident occurred while they repaired the crown block. a hatchet mingled with the blaze in a possible accident. The men, married and from Borger and West Virginia origins respectively, died en route to or at a Borger hospital.
A. and M. senior T. Samford, killed in a Friday night crash between College Station and Bryan, will be buried at Wills Point Sunday. A military escort from his company will accompany the body. four other students in the car escaped serious injuries as Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Samford, the youth's parents, will also travel to Wills Point with the casket.
