Partly cloudy conditions prevail in Amarillo and vicinity with possible showers along the Rio Grande Valley. West Texas fair overall with unsettled weather in New Mexico likely bringing showers and thunderstorms in northern and northeastern sections. Temperature readings from yesterday show early morning lows around 68 and a day with variable afternoon values.
Hope fades for locating the Hawaii Clipper and its 15 crew after an oil slick spotted 50 miles southwest of the last position suggested a plunge at sea. Army Meigs and naval forces race to search while Pan-American officials debate the meaning of the slick and a possible anchor oil dump.
A mass meeting of about 200 state farmers and officials in the Texas capital pressed for a legislative inquiry into CRA management of Buchanan Dam. Gov Allred would chair a voluntary panel, with Sen Holbrook to lead the probe starting Aug 8. Questions focus on whether Buchanan Lake was full before the flood and if negligence caused the flood.
Potter and Randall counties held separate Democratic conventions praising W Lee O Daniel for his primary victory and pledging support. Delegates to the Texas state convention were elected from Potter County and Hidalgo County Republicans also backed O Daniel for governor.
Amarillo merchants observe the first Monday of every month as Dollar Day and cooperate to offer special prices. Shoppers are urged to remember the date for crowd discounts and savings on purchases.
Hollywood figures invite Shirley Temple to join the Will Rogers Highway festivities in Amarillo August 15 to 17. Temple plans to travel from Boston to Hollywood as plans for a large live show unfold with Leo Carillo Irvin Cobb and Gov Allred among organizers.
Dalhart hosts the XIT Reunion with plans for a grand pageant, 400 years of Southwest history, and a Will Rogers Highway opening. Notables include Ab Blocker, Conductor Clay Thornton, and Jerome Cargill directing preparations for Aug 8 9 and Aug 15 17 performances.

Plans for a large Labor Day celebration in Amarillo include a forenoon parade and an evening dance at the Nat on Monday September 5. Delegations from Pampa and likely Lubbock are invited, with tickets on sale and Hamrick handling sales.
Plainview special report: James H. Guitar Jr 24 of Colorado Texas killed instantly when the car they rode in collided with another car and a truck on Highway 28 nine miles south of Plainview. His father critically injured with skull fracture and facial injuries. The Guitars had lived in Plainview. James had studied at Kemper Military School and Texas University and practiced law in Colorado.
A road survey between Stinnett and Dumas in the Texas Panhandle was ordered today by the Texas Highway Commission. The Panhandle delegation presented the request and other delegations will be heard in San Antonio on Monday.
KGNC will broadcast until midnight on weeknights starting tomorrow, shifting from 11 pm. The extra hour allows NBC dance music from many named bands before midnight, expanding programming.
