Sahara Hotel blaze injures 32 in Las Vegas
Four hundred guests evacuated a two story south wing of the Sahara Hotel as a two hour fire destroyed 40 rooms and sent smoke over the Strip. 32 people were treated for cuts or smoke inhalation and released. A hotel employee, Dessie Manigo, 22, was admitted for smoke inhalation. Damages were put at 250000 with earlier estimates higher. The casino and most high rise wings were untouched.

AUSTIN AP Gov John Connally used his veto pencil lightly on the 1969 spending bill but slammed lawmakers for trying to graft illegal legislation into the money bill. Sixteen vetoes trimmed only 1.36 million from 490 million in general revenue expenditures, with the bill still 36 million above 1968 spending and about 148 million over expected income for the year ending Aug 31, 1969. Connally also signed a 160 million tax bill to cover the deficit, including a one cent sales tax hike effective Oct 1. He criticized a 1.44 million lump sum for the State Department of Agriculture as a blatant attempt to shield unnecessary appropriations.
