In Little Rock Arkansas on July 19 a trusty convict guard was indicted for first degree murder and the prison official who accompanied him was indicted as an accessory before the fact in the killing of Helen Spence Eaton. Guard Frank Martin claims he fired a shotgun at Eaton as she tried to draw a pistol nine miles from the Jacksonville prison farm. He already serves a 21 year term for a separate 2nd degree murder in Saline County. Official Brockman and his wife, the prison superintendent, face additional charges for aiding Eaton’s escape. A state penal system shakeup followed Eaton’s death with the resignations of the penal superintendent and the appointment of S L Todhunter.
