Texas highway department announcesJuly August meeting contracts raising total to 5.7 to 6.0 million dollars. Projects include 46.9 miles concrete paving 26.9 miles grading and drainage several bridges and maintenance work. HiJacker Takes $8 In Cash From Laundry Driver

Two robberies were reported near 9 p.m. Saturday. A tall, slender youth mugged Guy D. Arterburn near 3418 Hayden Street, taking $8 as he fled in a Ford roadster. Arterburn had just turned in $70. The second incident involved a would-be thief at the Badger Inn, who entered through a torn screen and took only food.

Unemployed March On Stores In Henryetta Okla

A crowd of about 300 unemployed men and women marched on several downtown stores in Henryetta Oklahoma demanding food supplies after setting up an emergency relief store in city hall. They persuaded stores to provide boxes of food. some individuals entered a store with threats but no one was harmed.

Four youths sentenced to Sunday School service

In Houston on July 18 four youths aged 16 and 17 pleaded guilty to stealing 10 gallons of gas from A. H. Henderson’s car. They were sentenced by Judge Fred Turner to 22 days in Sunday School at the First Christian Church, to attend a class each Sunday until Christmas, as the instructor guides them in righteous ways.

Kilgore Tank Fire Threatens Town Hall

Flames destroyed oil tanks near Kilgore town hall as Earl Remwick, a Pace Petroleum worker, was fatally burned. The blaze spread to a cotton gin and silos, with total damage estimated at ten thousand dollars. Two youths were detained for smoking near the scene.

Week's Wheat Loadings Drop in Panhandle

Wheat loading in the Panhandle fell one third in the past week with 6,277 cars shipped by three railroads compared with 9,080 the prior week. Total Panhandle shipments for the 1931 crop reach 24,365 cars, over 35 million bushels. Youth Injured in Auto Crash Near Canyon

Cecil Slaton 17 of Canyon is improving after a head on collision west of Canyon on the Hereford highway that killed Raymond Schmitz 19 of Canyon. Mrs Stoker and Mr Stoker of Umbarger were injured. Schmitz died instantly. Slaton suffered multiple injuries. Funeral services for Schmitz set for 3:30 at St Ann Catholic Church Canyon with burial in Canyon Cemetery. Survived by parents Mr and Mrs William Schmitz and four sisters and a brother.

Farm hostess charged in Smithfield murder near Livingston

Lillian Creel a 25 year old farm girl who worked as a hostess at a rural dance hall was charged with murder in the death of Leon Dougherty a 21 year old bridegroom who had been married only a week. The shooting happened late yesterday at Smithfield near Livingston Texas.

Fall Begins Trip to Prison as Sun Sinks

Albert B. Fall former secretary of the interior started his journey to the New Mexico penitentiary at Santa Fe this afternoon. His wife and daughters wept as he was helped into an ambulance at his El Paso home and driven toward Three Rivers before continuing to Santa Fe. A large crowd, reporters, and photographers watched the departure as Fall dressed in pajamas and a green smoking jacket left for confinement.

Three Others Injured In Vehicle Crash In Community

A single-vehicle crash near the town left three others injured as the auto overturned. All victims are prominent long-time residents of the community, while the driver sustained unspecified injuries and is cooperating with investigators.
