The Kiwanis club sponsors a 90 minute program titled Rockin in Rhythm to raise funds for the Potter County Preventorium. Admission is 35 50 or 75 cents with proceeds supporting child health and preventing illness or death.
Works Progress Administrator Harry L. Hopkins told the Chautauqua Institution that Roosevelt era policies align with the American way and domestic peace. He praised federal job programs, defended the Wagner Act, and argued business must cooperate with government to preserve the economy and ensure jobs and security.
In Fort Worth on July 16 two young men were found asleep on benches near a tool shed in Trinity Park and were taken into custody at gunpoint by a caretaker. The shed had a forced door and tools were ready to be taken, with park employees noting loitering nearby overnight.
In remarks from 1936 and 1937, a prominent speaker described labor unrest as growing pains of an American institution. He argued unions counterbalance corporate power, noting individuals cannot bargain with large wealth and economic power without organized labor.
Wheat stocks in Kansas City surged by 7,092,000 bushels in five days as dealers expect a new record. Interior demand, elevator buying, and stockpiling ahead of harvest push total holdings to 17,182,000 bushels with 8,788 cars of wheat arriving this week, near last week’s peak.

In Austin on July 16 rail roads questioned the right of assistants to sit for the state tax commissioner and state comptroller at intangible tax board hearings. Preliminary sessions saw attendees for their principals without objection. Secretary of State Edward Clark recessed the session to July 26.
Ka ruizawa volcano erupted today sending smoke and ash across the region. The blast raised anxiety for nearby mulberry trees and the silk crop. All foreigners were safe but 30 Japanese holiday hikers on the mountainside were feared at risk. Two Japanese airmen recently piloted two heavy, German-made passenger liners from Berlin to Tokyo.

A 27 year old man from Melbourne traveled 8000 miles to Mayo Clinic where surgeons removed a half inch calcified casing from his heart. The operation, the second pericardiectomy at Mayo, lasted four hours with the heart exposed for portions and four ribs resected. Recovery was rapid and the Watkins plan to leave for Melbourne next month.
