National death toll climbs in July Fourth weekend
By The Associated Press at least 366 people were killed in holiday accidents by Saturday night as the Fourth of July weekend neared. Since 6 PM Thursday 167 died in traffic, 130 drowned, five fireworks deaths, 64 from other accidents. California led in traffic fatalities with 19, followed by Florida 14, New York 11, and Michigan and Pennsylvania 10 each.

Tragic Crash Leaves Two Dead In West Texas
A car crash near Vega killed Toby Derald Strickel, 15, and injured his mother and sister. The Strickel youth died at Northwest Texas Hospital from a skull fracture after the eastbound vehicle collided with a wheat truck on Highway 667 west of Vega. The girl's injuries were minor. Pat Strickel, 18, also sustained minor injuries. The husband and father’s family details and hospital transfers are noted. In a separate accident, Jack Marvin Palmer, 28, died instantly when his motorcycle collided with a wheat truck on Highway 287 north of Dumas. Fern Ringold, 17, was seriously injured and taken to Moore County Hospital. Palmer worked for Magnolia Petroleum in Sherman County. The bodies were at Blackburn-Shaw Memorial Chapel and Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home pending arrangements.
