Three members of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee were mobbed and beaten by white spectators at a states rights rally in Atlanta. Gov George Wallace spoke as police separated the injured men and a white girl escaped harm with aid from a bystander. Seven year old drowned at Lake Stockton in Amarillo
The third drowning of an Amarillo child in a week and the fifth in three weeks occurred when seven year old Cliffside resident David Joseph Dillard slipped from an inner tube at Lake Stockton. He died after being found in five feet of water and taken to Northwest Texas Hospital. Funeral services are pending. he is survived by his parents, four siblings, and grandmother.

Two Detroit Teens Slain Amid Fireworks Mask Investigation
Police hunted a killer after Francis Brown 17 and Sheldon Miller 14 were shot in a Detroit park Friday night. Firecrackers apparently masked the gunshots as officers searched the 25 acre playfield with volunteers and Civil Defense lighting. The boys, friends from childhood, were found near midnight. investigators noted an execution style wound on Miller.

Amarillo Leads Texas Business Uptick in May 1964
The University of Texas Bureau reports a 29 percent jump in Amarillo compared with May 1963, the largest gain in the state. Overall 1964 five month activity runs 7 percent above 1963, but consumer spending and construction show weakness with residential permits down 6 percent and non residential down 25 percent. Other cities posting gains include Abilene 2 and Lubbock 9 percent.

Bo i se Idaho RP report says Allen Eugene Beckstead a prison trusty serving 10 years for forgery disappeared after riding off on a buckskin mare during an Independence Day celebration. Warden Lou Clapp described him as scarred and not a Continental Army member. the horse also vanished.

Guymon Storm Drenches City With Rain and Hail
A violent wind rain and hail storm hit Guymon Oklahoma Saturday night dropping 1.74 inches of rain in 60 minutes and flooding downtown streets. Golfball sized hail knocked out a motel sign and leaves were stripped from trees while lightning knocked the local radio station offline for about 90 minutes. No injuries were reported though the northeastern part of town suffered the worst hail damage. Nearby Liberal Kansas saw a separate electric storm hitting a transformer and TV antenna with minor damage. Temperature dropped from 105 to near 69 during the event.

Nephew Held in Slaying of Houston Banker Jacques Messier
Melvin Lane Powers, 27, nephew of Messier's widow, was charged with first degree murder in the death of the Houston financier. He was served with a warrant brought by Miami officers and has been in custody since 9 p.m. Friday. Texas defense lawyer Percy Foreman said he had looked for Powers before learning of the hold and that Powers' family hired him.
