A border patrol party led by Capitan Marcus Hines of Mercedes clashed with 15 to 20 smugglers on the Rio Grande south of Mercedes. Three smugglers were believed killed, several wounded, and officer Brown Neale shot in the leg as agents pursued a halted pack train of liquor. Reinforcements arrived but the smugglers crossed the river with dead and wounded.
