Firefighters battled strong southwest winds as Jimmy Dunn reported about 50 000 damage to a two story Amarillo sixplex with 16 units. Deputies Stoney Jackson and Levi De Bose rescued residents including Charlotte Thompson from the burning building.
Killeen police Captain Charley Mitchell stopped a dynamite bomb with tape seconds before it would have exploded in a department store parking lot. The device contained dynamite, a pocket watch, a blasting cap, and a battery. a caller said it had been placed Friday and set to detonate at noon. An employee found the bomb and discarded it behind the store.
