Potter County taxpayers approved a $375,000 bond issue to finance a new baseball stadium at the Tri-State Fairgrounds by a 3 to 1 margin. The measure passed 1836 to 525 with a parallel vote approving reallocation of tax funds at 1855 to 467.
Voters in Ady School Masterson Ranch and Range Rider precincts approved both the bond issue and tax reallocation. Absentee ballots rejected the bond, with 13 in support and 14 against. Snow drizzle and fog accompanied polling. County Commissioner's Court to canvass results and set bid date for bonds. Stadium finance relies on tax bonds without tax-rate increase. Gaia Sox and stadium to be run as a Tri-State Air Association community project with 5 percent gate receipts to retire bonds. Capacity planned by architect Howard Ensign.
In Austin on January 21 Senator Price Daniel a Texas Democrat said he will complete his current term and not seek reelection in 1958 unless called to a more important duty at home He left open the possibility of a Draft Daniel movement and promised a Texas decision within about 30 days while aspiring to avoid a Washington career He urged readers and editors at a press conference to expect a clear answer soon and to stay tuned as he weighs the gubernatorial bid against his Senate tenure
Texas state bar directors urged disbarment or reprimands for attorney-legislators guilty of influence peddling. The bar called for local grievance committees to investigate all misconduct by lawmakers who also serve in the Legislature.
Liberal Kansas residents mobilize in a fight with Cities Service Gas Co over the 11 cent minimum wellhead price set by the Kansas Corporation Commission. Royalty owners fear federal court action could return to five and six cent contracts, risking hundreds of thousands in oil and gas royalties. The Southwest Kansas Royalty Owners Association backs the KCC order and joins the fight against a pending federal declaratory judgment suit.
John Jake Whittenburg aged 48 vanished from his Hutchinson County ranch home near the Canadian River last Thursday afternoon. He was found at 11:25 a.m. yesterday in rough country on the Turkey Track ranch in good condition after a search by two ranch workers and about 20 Will Rogers Range Riders from Amarillo.
The Hi-Plains Cutting Horse Assn presents its first annual contest at 2:30 p.m. in Fair Park Coliseum with over 50 horses entered. Top money winners from 1955 compete, including Poco lena owned by Don Dodge, while judges Ed Heller and J. D. Craft oversee the event. The purse exceeds $2,000 from entry fees and gate take.
The region saw 3.5 inches of snow at Canadian yesterday morning making it the wettest spot on the Golden Spread. Fog and low ceilings caused Amarillo air terminal flight cancellations and forecast calls for continued cloudy cold conditions with scattered showers and light snow across the Panhandle and New Mexico.
Voters in all Carson County precincts approved forming a water conservation district by a large majority. Authority notes that the district’s operation will be complicated by mixed approval across sections. The State Board recommended including Gray, Potter, Roberts, Armstrong and Donley counties, but only Pampa and Gray County Precinct No. 3 were approved for inclusion.
Cloudy and cold conditions span Amarillo and Panhandle with fog light snow possible Sunday morning and highs near 35. New Mexico sees mostly cloudy skies and cold temps with light rain or showers and mountain snow flurries into Sunday night. The Amarillo Fat Stock Show continues through Friday January 27.
Amarillo hosts the 29th Fat Stock Show and a professional rodeo at Tri-State Fairgrounds starting tomorrow. The event moves with the Western National at Denver and Southwestern at Fort Worth as entries are groomed for judges and visitors with 400 head of rodeo stock ready to perform.
The 1956 Amarillo fair runs eight rodeo performances at Fair Park Coliseum with two matinees. Angus cattle join stock show entries as premiums rise ten percent. About 300 cowboys including 1955 champions are expected, with stars like Jim Shoulders and Buck Rutherford. Miss Texas 1955 June Prichard will appear at all performances. The livestock exposition building now holds over 700 cattle units and other facilities have been expanded.
Five Southern state legislatures debate inter position as a major strategy to resist school desegregation. Alabama has passed a resolution with others ready for action in South Carolina and Georgia while Virginia discusses a milder protest. Governor Hodges may call a special session as talks continue.
