Municipal Judge Howard Hayes asks for a reduction in alimony payments to his first wife Grace Houston, claiming he has paid $34,000 since 1950. The Associated Press photos show Hayes on the husband’s side of the fence as the case unfolds.
Arthur Brisbane questions proposed cabinet post to collect salaries and host teas, mocking a Democratic government plan. He notes Roosevelt may appoint Alfred E. Smith to lead the Reconstruction Finance Corporation to assist banks and corporations while 30 million Americans remain in hardship.
Postal inspector W. M. Hughes said $22,538 stolen in the January 3 railway mail robbery in Minneapolis was recovered in Chicago. The recovery came through information provided by Minneapolis postal authorities and Milwaukee railroad officials.

The Senate voted to override President Hoover’s veto of the Philippine independence bill. The House had already overridden by 274 to 94. If accepted by the island legislature within a year, full independence would come in 10 to 13 years, and the new nation would be called the Commonwealth of the Philippine Islands.
Miriam A. Ferguson was inaugurated Texas governor for the second time in six years becoming the nation’s only female state head. In a brief address she urged swift tax reductions and urged legislature to cooperate while warning burdens on the masses. The ceremony, in the Hall of the House, featured her oath with the ancient Bible.
Helen Twelvetrees appears with her 2 month old son while claiming motherhood will not hinder her film career. In the lower photo Sue Carol and husband Nick Stuart cradle their 6 month old Carol Lee Stuart, both noted film figures.
Democratic leader says the United States will not recognize territorial gains gained through treaty violations and that statements on foreign policy must come from the Secretary of State. Roosevelt adds that American foreign policy must uphold the sanctity of treaties.
Four labor union officials face trial in Houston charged with using the mails to defraud unemployed men by promising jobs in South America. The jury retired after government and defense arguments and a lengthy charge by U S District Judge Charles B Kennamer.
J. M. Newby of 2804 Houston Street told police he was hijacked by two men on Monday night. The staged holdup occurred on Fifth Avenue between Polk and Tyler Streets and resulted in a loss of 95 cents.
Horace Cozart waived examining trial in Archer City and was bound over to the grand jury under $1,000 bond on a charge of forging a cashier's check for $100 on a non existent Amarillo bank and passing it.
In Dumas on January 17 three burglars attempted to crack the First State Bank safe. Night watchman Sam Hamilton was held captive for about two hours but released unharmed at Amarillo Creek. He alerted Sheriff Chester Logue after finding the vault door cut and the combination knob knocked from the inner door.
J E Ellis of Pampa found aid on Washington Street near Canyon Highway turn to theft when two strangers offered help for a flat. After repairing the tire the pair took Ellis s watch purse containing six dollars and his sedan, driving off toward Canyon.
Beatrice Ferguson Snipes, whose death sentence for slaying a York County officer was commuted to life last week by Governor Blackwood, gave birth today to a daughter. After commutation she had been moved from the state penitentiary to the state hospital for confinement, and she is already mother to a six-year-old son. The case involved shooting Elliott Harris after a rural officer stopped a car in which she rode with Clyde Snipes during a whiskey search.
Washington reports interest on U.S. government debt climbs sharply with 19 cents of every tax dollar going to interest this year. Forecasts show interest costs rising from 695 million to 725 million dollars next year, surpassing all but veterans relief in the budget. Officials consider lowering rates by new securities, noting half the bonds are held by banks and large institutions, the rest by individuals.
Samuel James Furnace accused of England's perfect murder died in custody at St Pancras Hospital from poison taken in his cell. Police searched his clothing before entry and Yard detectives who hunted him faced the mystery of how the poison was obtained.
Glendale California observed funeral rites yesterday for Jack Pickford, the former stage and screen actor who died recently. The service honored his career and memories of his work in early cinema.
George Bernard Shaw has agreed to speak in New York on April 11 at the Metropolitan Opera House as the guest of the Academy of Political Science. The Irish writer had sworn never to visit or speak in America, a vow he broke after appeals from Alanson B. Houghton and Viscountess Astor.
The U S weather bureau and Old Tim forecast a cold wave with snow but it did not arrive. H T Collman offered no alibi and the official outlook remained partly cloudy with light rain tonight and Wednesday. Temperatures dipped to near freezing Tuesday night with a 39 degree low and 43 at noon amid overcast skies and mist. New Mexico saw snow and colder air settled across Montana Wyoming the Dakotas and Sheridan Havre Rapids City.
Forecast for Amarillo and vicinity shows partly cloudy to cloudy skies with light rain tonight and Wednesday and only slight temperature changes. West Texas expects cloudy conditions with occasional rain, warmer in the southwest portion, while New Mexico sees snow in the north and snow or rain in the south, likely Wednesday with colder air. Temperature extremes today reach 39 to 43 degrees by 1 PM.
Gov R. B Sterling commuted Carter Rollins from death to life imprisonment hours before Ferguson took office. Rollins, a Tarrant County defendant, was to be electrocuted next Thursday for killing a white man during a house robbery. the proclamation cited lack of deliberate killing but noted Rollins was pursued by the deceased at the time.
The woman governor was first sworn in in 1925 and regained Texas governorship after three tough campaigns since her initial 1927 defeat. She defeated Dan Moody, who had been attorney general in her administration, and outgoing Gov R S Sterling did not participate in the induction. Sterling left the office at 11 55 this morning and departed. See Ferguson Page 2.

Denver M. Wright, a St. Louis manufacturer, sails for a second lion hunt in Mississippi County, aiming to stage a safari on a Mississippi River island about 20 miles away. He plans to shoot two 400 pound lions after obtaining carte blanche from Sheriff J. O. King, despite earlier protests and a prior failed hunt.
James Red Meadows aged 22, a former convict linked to several local holdups, was killed today by officers attempting to question him. Motorcycle Officer Emmett Bailey was wounded when he was shot in the left instep during a brief downtown exchange of gunfire at a street intersection.
Burglars broke in through a window at Johnson and Schramm service station on East Tenth Avenue and stole an oxy acetylene welding torch. No other equipment was taken.

An operations budget of 11500 was approved for the re organized Amarillo Chamber of Commerce in a finance committee meeting. The drive for funds begins next Tuesday with a goal of 2300 memberships at five dollars each to support the new body.
Amarillo City Commission will hear more arguments on changing 1210 Johnson Street from first to second manufacturing district to allow a Crescent Foundry Company operation. The session also will consider an ordinance outlining fire marshal duties.
