Rankin said Congress should act for Korean veterans, outlining a Legion backed bill as a starting point for hearings. It would grant education and training benefits for service after June 27, 1950 with limits on duration, ages, and courses, including a $300 tuition cap and midpoints for qualification.
Governor Allen Shivers announced his bid for re election to head the Texas Democratic Party in opposition to President Truman and his policies. He said he would return home for orders, would not reveal a Senate bid, and hopes a southern suited candidate emerges. The move drew applause from editors at a Texas Press Association meeting. He named Senator Richard Russell as his preferred national nominee, questioned Truman, and suggested Price Daniel might run against Senator Connally. Shivers, 44, has led Texas since July 1949 and cited family life and state issues as motives.
Governor Allan Shivers schedules stops in Childress Memphis and Canyon to address chamber of commerce banquets and civic clubs. About 1,000 Panhandle residents attend across three cities with 500 and 400 tickets sold for Childress and Canyon events. Ceremonial installations include Dr. Jack Frost as Chamber of Commerce official and Mrs. Loue Bowers as first female director. musical entertainment provided by the Amarillo Air Force Hand and West Texas State College Choir.
A resident investigated two burglaries then aided police, tracking three suspects across a long chase. The pursuit ended with all four being captured after a window break in and a dramatic stakeout, with one suspect noting a mining button to aid identification.
Former Congressman Martin Dies said he will run for the US Senate against Tom Connelly if he can raise 100000 for campaign expenses. Attorney General Price Daniel may also oppose. Dies, chief of the House Un American Activities Committee, plans a statewide broadcast January 21 to announce his intentions and says he will enter Congress if funds fall short.

General James A. Van Fleet tells AP that the Eighth Army is in better condition and overstrength, ready to repel a Red major offensive with air and ground fire. He notes increasing Red air power but asserts deterrence and readiness, while criticizing armistice talks as one-sided and delaying.
UN command observers report deadlock persists as North Korea hints at rebuilding military air fields while acknowledging possible flexibility. Chinese and Allied delegates note potential movement if red positions soften, with Maj. Gen. Turner suggesting a clear Reds stance could advance truce termination.

A 24 hour campaign to raise 25000 for the 1952 March of Dimes in Potter County opens Monday night with a 7:30 PM show at the Municipal Auditorium starring Dick Haymes and Frankie Masters. Dance tickets cost 180, show tickets 3, 2.50, 2, and 1.50, sponsored by the Downtown Lions Club. Masters and his orchestra will perform with Phyllis Myles and the Swingmaster.
Senator Aiken of Vermont calls for public hearings into a report on shortages in the Agriculture Department price support program. He cites a Senate Agriculture Committee document by Comptroller General Warren estimating four million dollars in losses. Department officials admit losses up to about a million dollars, likely less than private losses in similar operations. The report labels most losses as conversions of government commodities by private firms, including contracts with 15,000 storage concerns. Court action has begun in at least six cases as surveys probe shrinkage and misappropriation. Aiken says contracts with about 40 elevators and warehouses allowed theft by selling government grain and diverting funds. The matter is tied to the Commodity Credit Corporation operations.
In Pampa yesterday afternoon at a tourist court owned by Sie Bowers a shooting left Bowers seriously injured. Joe Rush 60 turned the shotgun on himself and died en route to the hospital. The incident began when Rush fired at Bowers then shot himself. Details note Rush’s apartment at the court and possible amputation being considered for Bowers. Continued on page th.
