Amelia Earhart Putnam lands in Oakland after the first solo flight from Hawaii to the mainland. She smiles, exposes a combed hairdo, and receives a roaring crowd as the red monoplane touches down at 1 30 P M Pacific time.
The First Lady of the Air, Amelia Earhart Putnam, completed a solo flight from Hawaii to the North American continent. The milestone marks the first solo crossing of its kind by a female aviator and sets a new pace for women in aviation.
Report by Gene Elo describes a massive Vega rabbit drive in which about 500 hunters fired roughly 30 000 rounds, killing an estimated 12500 jackrabbits and scattering carcasses across a 12 mile tract near Vega. General Loyd led the operation amid blowing sand and stiff wind, with more rabbits seen to resume raids on Oldham County farms. Continued on Page 2.
George S. Hamlin, charged with slaying his former bride, hired Amarillo lawyer E. T. Miller after three days in solitary confinement. Miller, who met Hamlin for two hours, declined to reveal defense details and expects trial readiness when the eight week term of the 47th District Court opens January 28. Hamlin offered no comments beyond saying Miller would speak for him. He recalled 1918 U S Army service and left Amarillo yesterday without further statement.

In Saar, 539,000 eligible Germans prepare to vote on whether the territory returns to Germany remains under League oversight or becomes French. Blizzard conditions disrupt communications and delays to train schedules impede transport of voters. Balloting begins 8 am tomorrow with results due early Tuesday.
In Saarbrucken on January 12 the anti Nazi United Front reported Nazi agitators move through Jewish districts asking how they will vote in tomorrow's Saar plebiscite. Jews allegedly respond they will favor alignment with the Allies.
In Saarebrucken the tally of the historic plebiscite will not be released until Tuesday after all votes are counted. Precautions include no telephone service in the Wartburg auditorium and a ban on reportage until A Brodhe, head of the plebiscite commission, broadcasts the results in French and German.
In Austin on January 24 James V. Allred of Wichita Falls prepares to take the oath as governor in a noon ceremony attended by his parents and thousands. He will be the second youngest Texas governor, with indoor options if weather turns sour. Walter F. Woodul of Houston will be sworn in as lieutenant governor before Allred.
The Washington Post reports James A. Farley postmaster general is floated as a successor to Will Hays as head of the motion picture producers and distributors association. Roosevelt, Nicholas Schenck, and Harry M. Warner reportedly hold strong influence on the board, with Hays’ removal seen as imminent.
Washington whispers of swift congressional moves to avert possible chaos if the Supreme Court overrules the Roosevelt monetary program in the gold clause cases. Bruno Hauptmann will answer seven questions at the defense case with six expected to be no. His attorney says the plan includes calling his wife Anna to testify and seeks equal consideration as in the Lindbergh case. The seven questions cover kidnapping location ladder presence and ransom notes.
Doris Sharp, 15, died en route to the hospital after an auto crash 13 miles west of Tulia as she and her brother Frank, 15, returned from school. Frank suffered a broken arm severe facial and head lacerations and possible internal injuries. Passing motorists said the car struck a parked truck. Parents Mr and Mrs Alvis Sharp reside 16 miles west of here.
Chicago January 12 Fourteen persons arrested by the narcotic squad as an intensive drive began to prevent malaria spread through hypodermic needles. Four malaria deaths in the past week were attributed to this source.
Washington reports a plan to plant four million trees next spring as the first phase of a vast shelterbelt spanning from Canada to the Texas Panhandle. The American Tree Association named 23 of 30 tentative planting areas, each with 139 000 trees in five mile by ten rod strips across the Dakotas Nebraska Kansas Oklahoma and Texas. The forest service has seed to grow about 100 million seedlings for 1936 planting, endorsed by President Roosevelt with a 1 million dollar 1934 allotment.
A norther from the Canadian Northwest heads for the Panhandle Plains with morning lows near 25 and possible record 15 tonight. The storm trailing a high pressure front moves in late tonight from Pueblo Colorado, with little moisture expected for cattle ranges. The cold snap is described as short, with prior freezes reaching 19 degrees in two spells this fall and winter.
Funeral arrangements for Mrs. W. A. Johnson 69 widow of Lieut. Gov. W. A. Johnson remain incomplete in Memphis. She once published The Hall County Herald from 1923 to 1928 and was active in Texas newspaper circles with ties to the Texas Press Association and the Panhandle Press Association. Surviving relatives include daughter Mrs. Ray Bass of Memphis and son Earl Johnson of Los Angeles.
Edward McFadden known as Father Tom, last with only one exception of the Touhy gang, surrendered in Chicago to await trial on Wisconsin anti machine gun law. The move leaves Tommy Touhy as the sole remaining leader of the once dominant group controlling beer sales in Chicago's northwest suburbs. Collins named by cowmen.
