In 1965 Texas Panhandle exploration rose versus 1964 overall but drilling for the king of fuels declined. The 26 counties logged 3,316,584 feet of hole, down 17 percent from about four million feet in 1964. Wildcatting rose to 66 attempts, two more than 1964, with a 10 percent gain over 1962–64. Secondary recovery attracted focus, including the mammoth area’s first fireflood noted on page D-7.

In Cold Blood rights clash ends in club clash
Irving Lazar, 58, writer’s agent, is arrested on felonious assault charges after a late night dispute with Otto Preminger over film rights to Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood at the 21 Club. Preminger, who suffered a gash and lip cut, says Lazar attacked his wife. Lazar claims Preminger tried to strike his wife and insulted them.

Cong Forest Base Struck in Viet Nam Offensive
UPI reports American forces led by 7,000 troops with Australian and New Zealand support launched the largest Viet Nam war operation to clear the Ho Bo Forest stronghold 25 miles north-northwest of Saigon. Helicopters faced heavy fire as units from the 1st Infantry Division and the 173rd Airborne Brigade moved into landing zones around the forest.

Fire Loss $650000 in New Orleans and Gretna Blaze
Predawn fires cause $650000 damage including two floors of a Gretna school and $150000 of the Hibernia Bank building in New Orleans. Arson is suspected at the school, witnesses report a dull explosion before flames raced through the structure. Three firefighters were injured as 125 firefighters and 26 units battled the blazes and valuable records at Delta Steamship lines were reported lost.

Leftists See Peace Chance From Hanoi Visit
A trio of Americans visiting Hanoi concluded talks with North Viet Nam Premier Pham Van Dong and Viet Cong representatives, saying talks suggested elements of an honorable peace. They asked to address the Senate Foreign Relations Committee about information unknown to many in the U.S. The group included Staughton Lynd Thomas Hayden and Herbert Aptheker, opposed to U.S. policy, and was hosted by Viet Report.
