A coyote entered Elm Valley schoolhouse near Shamrock chasing by 10 baying hounds. The dog and coyote fight disrupted classes for about thirty minutes as desks chairs and maps were damaged. Teacher Mrs. Maggie Sutton oversaw the chaos before dismissal and repairs.
Amarillo banks show deposits rise for the year end 1930 with total $18,772,813.55 against $18,888,381.31 a year earlier. The Ardmore murder case against Colquitt Davis continued after defense sought a delay to let his hair grow, claiming the haircut affected his appearance. the judge denied the request and the trial moved forward.
J W Martin a 55 year old farmer missing since yesterday was found dead near his Grandview home. He had been shot through the head with a pistol found nearby and the coroner returned a death by own action verdict.

Robert L. Williams, 18, an Austin sophomore, was absolved of responsibility after a Beaumont grand jury returned a no bill in the shooting death of Elizabeth Johnson, 17. Williams had been held on $10,000 bond after waiving a preliminary hearing in Port Arthur, where authorities say a small rifle bullet struck Miss Johnson in a car. He says he found her shot upon returning to the vehicle after seeking help from a local minister to reconcile with her. The grand jury action released Williams from bond and from further charges.
Amarillo mayor Ernest Thompson urges support for a Loyalty campaign to create real work at real wages. He warns of January to March hardship, urges landlords and businesses to share work, and asks churches to identify jobless members for neighborly aid.
Galveston January 3 A woman is sought after Tommy Reis escaped from the county jail last night Jailer Joe Meyer was fatally shot by an accomplice of Reis Reis under a 35 year sentence for robbing Mrs Carrie W Moeller 73 year old widow slain in Galveston county today the search for Reis and his confederate continues on page 11 col 1
Building activity starts strong in Amarillo with nearly $600,000 in permits issued Friday and Saturday. The $400,000 courthouse permit, issued Jan. 2, makes up much of the total. Inspector A. W. Smalley calls it an excellent start and says prospects look bright for a record year.
Athens January 3 Mayor John A Spencer died from injuries after his car left the highway and struck a tree four miles from town. He suffered a possible heart attack before losing control and died en route to a hospital. Spencer served a third term and was survived by his widow a son and a daughter.
A Panama envoy to the United States becomes the new head of state, signaling a shift in leadership. The announcement positions the envoy as the nation’s chief executive, with political implications for Panama’s foreign policy and domestic governance.

Marshal Joseph Joffre, savior of Paris in 1914, died at 8 23 a m after a long illness and leg amputation. Funeral plans favor a simple burial at La Chataignerie Louveciennes with a state ceremony in Notre Dame and a later interment at the Hotel des Invalides.
The Texas Plains Building and Loan Association reports a 825 percent asset rise to 1,240,940.95 and pays 39,125.36 in dividends to members for January 1931. Since 1926 the firm has paid dividends with uninterrupted records and places a permanent reserve fund in place amid strong new investor commitments.
Noted songwriter Charles K Harris who wrote After the Ball died December 22 leaving an estate valued around 10 000 dollars to his widow Cora L Harris.
