Westmoreland orders 24 hour cease-fire in Vietnam

General Westmoreland says American forces will curtail offensive operations for 24 hours starting 6 p.m. Saigon time today in line with a Christmas cease-fire backed by the South Vietnamese government. Earlier, U.S. bombers hit targets as the Viet Cong proclaimed a three day truce not accepted by allies.

Bethlehem Basilica Opens to Many for Christmas Amid War

A drizzle falls on Judea as Bethlehem's Basilica Nativity, now in Jordanian territory no longer, opens to many for Christmas for the first time after last summer's Middle East conflict. Msgr. Two Amarillo Women Hurt In Hayden Duplex Explosion

A gas explosion at 1406 Hayden in Amarillo leveled a brick duplex and damaged nearby homes. Two residents Mrs. Jo Ann Coury and Mrs. Bertha Phelps suffered minor injuries and were in satisfactory condition at Northwest Texas Hospital. Fire officials cited a gas buildup with unknown ignition.

Ex-Resident Auto Fatality Near Bowie Kills Richard Stevenson

A three car crash about 2 miles south of Bowie on U.S. 287 killed Richard Stevenson, 31, of McKinney, and injured his wife Beverly, 30, and their two children. James Kaiser of Bowie and two other passengers were treated and released. Stevenson, former Amarillo resident and Texas Power and Light supervisor, died at Bowie Memorial Hospital. Johnson meets Pope in Vatican amid Vietnam peace talks

President Johnson and Pope Paul VI held an hour long Christmas audience as Johnson wrapped up a worldwide trip. He said the United States could begin peace talks with North Vietnam and halt bombing if the enemy shows restraint. The Vatican said the Pope offered non specific suggestions toward ending the fighting.
