Early Amarillo Banker Sees City Grow Over Fifty Years

The First National Bank of Amarillo began 50 years ago with $50,000 capitalization in a two room operation in the old Amarillo Hotel annex. W. H. Fuqua, longtime bank president, recalls nights spent closing large cattle deals and the absence of banking hours as the town boomed. J. E. Lowndes, original bookkeeper, remains a bank executive. The bank's early days saw frame buildings, dirt streets, and rapid cash movements, with plans soon to build a larger bank.

Nelson Recaptured Near Stinnett After Jail Escape

Andrew H. Nelson, escaped from Huntsville penitentiary on August 1, was recaptured tonight in a house two miles west of Stinnett. Ranger Maney Gault of Lubbock and Deputies Dale Lane and Dutch Looman made the arrest. Nelson, serving 11 to 18 years for car theft and robbery, may face questions about a recent Sunray store holdup, and a car stolen at Sanford was found nearby. He is to be taken to Lubbock for further questioning.

Rabey Funk prominent Amarillo architect dies of pneumonia at 36 in St. Anthony's Hospital after a major operation. Funeral set for Tuesday at Sacred Heart Cathedral. He led civic work, belonged to Kiwanis and Knights of Columbus, and designed major West Texas and eastern New Mexico buildings. He leaves five children and his widow.

Four Injured in Plains Crashes

Four persons were injured in three automobile accidents near Amarillo yesterday due to slippery icy pavement. Mrs. Bessie Woodring of Oklahoma City suffers a fractured pelvis and dislocated hip and is described as quite serious at St. Anthony’s Hospital. C. L. Clement of Shamrock has a back injury and is released after treatment. Mrs. L. A. Wheeler of Albuquerque suffers a fractured leg after colliding with a stopped car near the Texas New Mexico state line. Maud Moody of Fort Worth is hospitalized with a broken leg after a near head on collision southeast of Amarillo on Highway 370.
