Civil War survivor Walter Williams dies at 117
Walter Williams aged 117, the last of the four million men who fought in the Civil War, died Saturday in Amarillo. The death prompted President Eisenhower to declare a day of national mourning. Williams suffered multiple health setbacks, including pneumonia bouts, and had been blind and deaf in his later years. His daughter, Mrs. Willie Mae, survives.

Youthful Robbers Hit Guy's Liquor Store for $277
A trio of youths robbed Guy's Liquor Store at 2818 NE 8th after 8:30 p.m. Saturday, grabbing a pint sack of cash and four bottles of whiskey before fleeing. Store manager Hazel Austin described one bandit as extremely nervous and brandishing a snub nose revolver. A Greenville man nearby observed the robbers running down an alley toward Avalon Club.

Two Batista Officers Shot in Cuba War Crimes Trial
In Pinar del Rio two ex officers, Jose Antonio Morifi Reyes and Luis Lara Crespo, were executed by firing squad at 7 a.m. after being convicted of leading an armed movement against Fidel Castro. The pair’s deaths bring Cuba’s war crimes executions since January to about 650, with four a day during the first half of the year. Lara, 21, led guerrillas in the Sierra de Las Organos.
