Civil War survivor Walter Williams dies at 117

Walter Williams aged 117, the last of the four million men who fought in the Civil War, died Saturday in Amarillo. The death prompted President Eisenhower to declare a day of national mourning. Williams suffered multiple health setbacks, including pneumonia bouts, and had been blind and deaf in his later years. His daughter, Mrs. Willie Mae, survives.

Youthful Robbers Hit Guy's Liquor Store for $277

A trio of youths robbed Guy's Liquor Store at 2818 NE 8th after 8:30 p.m. Saturday, grabbing a pint sack of cash and four bottles of whiskey before fleeing. Store manager Hazel Austin described one bandit as extremely nervous and brandishing a snub nose revolver. A Greenville man nearby observed the robbers running down an alley toward Avalon Club.

Allies Seek Solid Front For Summit Invitation

Western Big Four agreed to invite Soviet Premier Khrushchev to a likely April summit and to work four months toward a solid Western front. Eisenhower de Gaulle talks addressed tensions over NATO command and Berlin, with Adenauer and Macmillan also at the Elysee meeting.

Two Batista Officers Shot in Cuba War Crimes Trial

In Pinar del Rio two ex officers, Jose Antonio Morifi Reyes and Luis Lara Crespo, were executed by firing squad at 7 a.m. after being convicted of leading an armed movement against Fidel Castro. The pair’s deaths bring Cuba’s war crimes executions since January to about 650, with four a day during the first half of the year. Lara, 21, led guerrillas in the Sierra de Las Organos. Morifi was older. Also noted are appeals by John V. Martino against a 13-year anti-government sentence.

In Charleston West Virginia Petty Foster 29 prompted police to her home to report abuse and led them to a hidden floor cache beneath a speed limit sign containing 13 half gallon jars of dark liquor. Foster was released on 1000 dollar bond awaiting trial for possession of moonshine whiskey.
