Escape of 13 convicts alarms Jackson in dramatic prison break

Five inmates seized a housewife and a nurse as hostages during a wild escape from Southern Michigan Prison. Thirteen fugitives hijacked a car, terrorized two households, and fled until five were captured within hours. One car wrecked in a Jackson ditch. two suspects reportedly remained at large. Rescue efforts hampered on Myrdalsjokull glacier

Burned refinery worker critical after Sunray blaze

Orville D. Hardaway, 52, of Sunray, was critically burned at the Shamrock Sunray refinery when propane vapors escaped from a 12 inch upstream line and a flash fire swept the area. He suffered extensive third degree burns and the plant may stay shut for a week as cooling towers and associated pipes are inspected. The fire, which began at 12:50 PM, drew seven other workers, four fire trucks, and halted operations at the two refineries serving the area.

Bandit Joins Victim in Prayer After Religious Sermon

A 34 year old would be robber at Spragin Service Station in Houston prayed with the attendant after a Baptist sermon moved him. Willie Hargrave, 19, night manager, said the man broke his whiskey bottle and surrendered when police arrived. He admitted planning a holdup to fund Christmas gifts for his wife.

Burials for Bobby Greenlease kidnap slayers end

The executed kidnap slayers Hall and Heady were buried in Missouri and Kansas cemeteries as mourners mourned the monstrous crime. Mrs Heady was buried with her parents in Clearmont and Hall with his family in Pleasanton. Gravesides lasted about 10 minutes and names were not spoken.

U S Treasury agents arrested two Arizona men in Tucson after they attempted to sell 24 pounds of gold at a black market price. Miner Joseph F. Savoren and Pima county Game Warden Blue Tharp face charges under the Gold Reserve Act. Agents seized the gold and began tracing its source amid speculation of Mexican smuggling or buried Spanish treasure. A hearing is set for January.
