Worley To Talk Here Friday

Schoolboy Race To Semi Finals Amarillo Faces Sunset Dallas

Amarillo and Sunset Dallas meet in the Texas schoolboy football semi finals next week. Breckenridge takes on Austin after both sides won by double digits to reach the penultimate round. Amarillo’s Sanates led a 33-6 win over San Angelo, while Sunset upset Highland Park 13-7. Austin defeated John Reagan 19-0 to advance. Breckenridge beat the Lumbied Panthers 21-13 to join the other semi finalists. Breckenridge will host Austin Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

Troops Saved as Transport Lost In Pacific Area

A 4000 man troop transport formerly the President Coolidge hit a mine and sank in the South Pacific, with only four saved. The loss, the largest in the war so far, followed a rescue that averted a possible major navy disaster. Navy reports gave few details, while other war notes from the Solomons described Japanese airfield construction near Guadalcanal and attacks by Army planes on Shortland Island and Fasi harbor.

Allied Bombers Hit Rouen and Naples in Wide Axis Raids

Allied air forces struck German industry and transport at Rouen France and shipping and targets across Italy and North Africa. In Rouen heavy bombers and escorts claimed 18 enemy fighters shot down, with two bombers and four Allied fighters reported missing. the raid marked the heaviest score for heavy bombers since November. British RAF patrols hit an airfield and canal barges in Holland with two losses. At Naples American Liberators inflicted heavy damage while Italian reports claimed limited damage at Turin. All planes reportedly returned from Naples missions, while weather hindered Rouen results. Continued coverage noted further raids from multiple Allied bases against Axis production and transport.

Fighting Navy Skipper Receives Medal of Honor in San Francisco

Bruce McCandless, 31, commanding the flagship San Francisco, was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor by Admiral Ernest J. King aboard the damaged cruiser. He led the ship through heavy shellfire off Savo Island in the Solomons last November 13 after most senior officers were killed and he was wounded. Thousands of San Franciscans watched from the waterfront as veterans filled the decks and cranes.
