East Side residents faced a heavy snow event Sunday with significant accumulations. City crews mobilized plows and dispatchers urged caution as school operations and travel were disrupted by the conditions.
A tricky aloft low pressure system shifted northeast from the El Paso area dumping more than 16 inches of snow in eastern Texas Panhandle communities on Saturday into early Sunday. The storm moved into the Plains with Oklahoma expecting more snow as the front advances eastward. Towns reported heavy totals including Wellington 16 inches and Shamrock 15 with others ranging from 8 to 14 inches.
Secretary of Defense Thomas Gates told the Pennsylvania Society that four years of unarmed U S reconnaissance flights had riddled Soviet air defenses and exposed their leadership. He asserted America and its defense setup are in first rate condition and called Soviet bluster a sign of weakness versus strength.

A head-on collision on US 54 near Goodwell Oklahoma at 5:45 p.m. killed Arnold Wells 19 once of Guymon now residing in Amarillo. Four others were seriously injured Manning Gray son 27 of Goodwell Lyndell Shepherd 19 of Shattuck Mary Lee Murdock 20 of Springer and Tex Demuth 22 of Hugoton. Wells body taken to Henson Funeral Home Guymon. Wells was driving west when collision happened amid two inches of snow.

Six airmen parachuted from a crippled B52 were found alive in northern New York. Two remained missing as rescue teams with floodlit helicopters searched the snow clad Adirondack region for fires or flares. One injured airman named as IC Charles E. Morris of Clearwater Florida was reached after a long rescue effort.
At Vandenberg Air Force Base California Captain Gene W Jones piloted a C119 to snag a 300 pound parachuted capsule from the Discoverer satellite at 13000 feet about 400 miles from Hawaii. The recovered capsule carried radiation tests blood and bone marrow specimens and secret equipment to guard against surprise attacks. The capsule circled the earth every 54 minutes for three days and will be studied at the School of Aviation Medicine in San Antonio Texas. This marked the fourth recovery of a Discoverer capsule in space history.
