In Austin AP reports the new No Smoking law takes effect Monday prohibiting smoking in public places where signs are posted. Many other laws and revisions go into effect September 1 or later, including a $12 billion general appropriations bill to fund state operations for two years without new taxes.
State lawmakers debate posting No Smoking or Smoking Permitted signs as the effective date nears. A spokesman for State Sen. Jack Ogg says the matter has caused confusion while awaiting an Attorney General ruling. Building managers face a last minute choice on signage.
State no smoking law takes effect Monday with fines up to 200 dollars for smoking in public places. In Amarillo, Northwest Texas Hospital allows smoking only in 16 areas plus a meeting room as officials prepare decals for 32 city buses. Transit officials expect the rule to save time and curb smoking on transit.
