Allied forces repelled a Japanese assault at Milne Bay in a decisive stand that thwarted an invasion threat to Australia. The victory underscored the Pacific campaign's turning momentum as Allied troops held the line and inflicted heavy losses on the attackers.
A gulf hurricane swept across the Central Texas coast from Matagorda Bay to a broad northwest arc. One man, George Kain, 76, drowned in Matagorda as the town faced complete destruction. Port Lavaca Palacios Freeport and Corpus Christi area damage reported with uprooted trees and lost communications. Coast guards rescued fourteen and aided crews near Freeport Del Mar Beach and Brazos Island.

Soviet airmen raided Berlin Koenigsberg and Danzig last night severing weather constrained RAF duties. Berlin reportedly saw 48 fires as daytime renewed regional attacks targeted docks depots and depots.
Scrap steel piles are dwindling to two or three weeks supply per the American Iron and Steel Institute. Amarillo residents are asked to help by bringing any scrap metal to the pile at 614 West Fourth Street on Saturday, possibly finding items people overlook as valuable scrap.
