Kazen Concedes In Bitter Race For Congress

Lloyd M. Bentsen Jr of Mc Allen defeated Philip Kazen of Laredo for the 15th District seat in unofficial Saturday results. The bitter contest highlighted the July runoff with Bentsen narrowly ahead as Kazen conceded. Pickett Thornberry and McClain also led in their districts.

Potter County votes decide sheriff and commissioner in close run

In a tight run off Potter County voters elected Paul Gaither sheriff and John Halley County Commissioner No. 1. Stevenson carried the Senate race while Lyndon Johnson trailed. Unofficial totals from 26 of 27 boxes show Gaither 6 765 to Cherryhames 3 674 with Halley 4 689 to Cole 4 537. The general election is set for November 2.

Final Tabulation May Be Required To Settle Issue

Lyndon Johnson trailed Coke Stevenson in the Texas US Senate race as the Texas Election Bureau released late night figures. Stevenson led by 854 votes after 244 of 252 counties reported with 132 complete, Johnson gaining 2,907 in Hidalgo while Wilbarger counts were corrected for an earlier overcount. The final tabulation for the night kept Stevenson ahead by a slim margin.

In late returns Stevenson leads Johnson by about 6 000 votes with 850 971 counted. Jefferson County boosts Johnson while Dallas Harris and Gregg show mixed results. El Paso and Bexar provide narrow Johnson margins, Tarrant and Duval tilt heavily Stevenson. Continued on Page 11.

Symphony Board Opens Two Days for Amarillo Phil Reservations

Patrons of the Amarillo Philharmonic season are asked to pick up and pay for reservations on Monday or Tuesday. The Symphony Board will be open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Southwestern Public Service Company offices Polk at Fourth. Afterward all sales for the season will be cash, officials said.

Four new polio victims admitted to Plainview clinic

Plainview Sanitarium and Clinic polio ward admitted four new patients from Friday noon to Saturday noon, bringing the total under treatment to 29. Admitted were Joyce Vanderberg eight, Billy Stevens, Larry Rawlin, and Walter Meyers twenty one. Meyers is in critical condition with bulbar polio. a tracheotomy was done and an iron lung ready. Dismissed were Max Robbins seventeen and Kenneth Kirkpatrick sixteen after eleven days of treatment. Red Cross nurses will increase to five in the ward.

Draft registration starts Monday for Potter County men

The News-Globe notes that draft registration begins Monday for men born in 1922 after August 30. They must register between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. at the draft headquarters in Municipal Auditorium.

Plane Parts Factory May Be Moved Here

Amarillo officials consider leasing the engine laboratory building to a West Coast aircraft parts company seeking an inland site. Four executives from Flick Corporation Air Products Inc Haag and Bischoff are in Amarillo meeting with local businessmen. If moved, the plant would hire about 100 workers in four months with room to grow.

School Enrollment and Start Dates Listed for Amarillo

Amarillo public schools begin Tuesday September 7 with early enrollment for elementary students on Friday September 3. Junior and senior high enrollments occur September 2 to 3 by alphabetical blocks. Area colleges and centers set September start dates and enrollment times for freshmen sophomores and all students. Boarding and religious academy sessions also note September starts with staggered enrollment. See Page 4 for details.

Four killed in Highway 287 collision near Amarillo

At 1 15 this Sunday morning a car truck wreck at the Highway 287 Pullman Road intersection seven miles east of Amarillo killed four people and injured two others. Cooter Young 30 driver of the truck and three young Clarendon residents Madeline Osteen Claude Doris McKee were identified by belongings. In St Anthony’s Hospital Jack Simmons Hedley and L D Aten Jr Lelia Lake were listed as seriously hurt.

Dominican Abbot Arrested in Smuggling Case

Prague reports the Czechoslovak Interior Ministry says a Dominican Abbot and ten others including several priests were arrested on charges of smuggling traitors abroad and providing documents to a foreign espionage service. Abilene notes J. Bryan, Texas cattle baron and former state senator, died at 88. he arrived in Taylor County 67 years ago and was among the few remaining graduates of Texas A&M’s first class.
