Burglars looted San Jacinto Methodist Church in west Amarillo then a fire erupted in an upstairs office. Arson is suspected as flames confined to the east central upstairs office. damages run to thousands. Fire units reached the scene within minutes.
Mayor A F Madison urged that all real estate pay their share of city taxes at a Labor Day breakfast joined by about 300 labor and management representatives. He backed the Sept 12 charter amendment and bond elections and noted some Amarillo residents oppose the measures, especially undeveloped property owners.
Partly cloudy with scattered thundershowers forecast for Amarillo and Northwest Texas through Monday. Highs 85 to 95. New Mexico fair with afternoon cloudiness and a few storms east of Rio Grande Valley. Weather details and sunrise sunset listed. Davis jailed Louisisana Attorney General Jack Gremillion was cited for contempt after leaving a court session amid clashes over desegregation. A temporary injunction barred state actions blocking integration in New Orleans and ordered school control returned to the Orleans Parish School Board to implement Judge J Skelly Wright's May order for first grade integration this fall.
In Amarillo the sun shone for 216 of 240 days and readings at 3 p.m. Saturday show wind and visibility figures for several cities. In Baton Rouge governor Davis says he will seek all legal remedies while court actions loom on desegregation and Judge Wright's motion.
Congolese army troops raided a United Nations office in Stanleyville injuring eight U.S. airmen and two other workers. U.N. and Ethiopian troops detained and later treated the injured at a hospital as the United Nations protested to Congo authorities.
Stanley Weyman a 67 year old man who spent decades posing as varied dignitaries and professionals was shot and killed by robbers while working as a night motel manager at the Dunwoodie Motel. Authorities say he fought back and carried extra cash on his person. His long career of deception began in Brooklyn as a teen and included claims as a foreign diplomat doctor and lawyer.
Harvey L. Davis 39 of Bona Vista died after a one car crash on the Fritch Highway eight miles west of Borger. His car left the pavement overturned multiple times and Davis was thrown from the vehicle. He died en route to North Plains Hospital. Survived by his wife Jean two daughters Glenna and Vicki and son Leonard all at 309 Caliche Bona Vista mother Mrs Bessie Davis of Borger five sisters and three brothers. Funeral arrangements pending with Simpson Funeral Home Borger.
Sheriff Harlan Wright planned a stakeout after a tip of a supermarket robbery. A deputy and an armored car guard were wounded in a Friday night gun battle as an armored car followed by a Plymouth car triggered the shootout.
Earl Kemp Long the Pea Patch Philosopher won Louisiana’s Eighth District seat in a Democratic runoff over incumbent Harold McSween with 38,699 to 34,242 unofficial votes. Long, hospitalized and sedated, spoke softly about campaign attacks on his sanity as McSween conceded.
U2 pilot Francis Gary Powers may work 40 hours weekly in a Soviet prison with nearly all needs supplied. He would receive about 750 rubles monthly if a model worker, with 100 to 130 rubles deducted for food and the rest for a prison canteen.
