Sheriff doubts crucifixion tale in Reno cross incident

Ed ward Collins, 27, a former California convict, claims he was nailed to a cross by two former associates. Sheriff Ray Root questions the story and cites five possible motives, while District Attorney Ernest Brown says kidnapping and mayhem charges could follow if suspects are caught. Collins was found after screams near a road outside Reno and taken to a hospital.

Cole defeats Blackburn for Potter County clerk in run-off

Potter County voters chose Cole over incumbent W E Blackburn by 596 votes in the county clerk race. Mark Parker won the county commissioner spot in Precinct No 2 by 19 votes, and John Arnot captured the office of hide and animal inspector by a wide margin. Final returns show Cole with 3233 to Blackburn 2637, Parker 87 to Jones 68, and Arnot 3613 to Rentfro 2187.

Lone Spanish destroyer fights four gunboats near Gibraltar

A Spanish government destroyer, the Jose Luis Diez, battled four insurgent ships for two and a half hours 10 miles southeast of Gibraltar. Twenty sailors died trapped in the bow area while six others were lost overboard. Commander Juan Antonio Castro, 27, guided the battered ship into Gibraltar under its own power with heavy damage to the engine room. Bodies were later buried offshore near the battle site.
