Bulls take charge in a brisk session as stocks rise over $1 to more than $4 a share led by Public Utilities. Cotton climbs to multi year highs above 9 cents per pound with gains over 12 cents per pound in the period. Wheat adds about 2 cents a bushel while bonds steady after prior declines.
In New Orleans on August 27, nine cent cotton for immediate delivery appeared as futures staged a sharp rise. The October contract climbed to 9.18, about 20.25 per bale above the June 10 year’s low, while spot cotton rose 56 points to 9.08 cents per pound. Strong Liverpool market signals, heavy overnight buying, crop reports, and a bullish weather forecast including West Indies hurricane warnings fueled the advance. J P Howard from California pleaded guilty to misdemeanor theft of silk hosiery from Sears Roebuck. Judge E C Nelson Jr. sentenced him to 30 days after Assistant County Attorney George McCarthy argued the prisoner was eager to avoid hunger and shelter costs this winter. Howard claimed he would not steal goods valued over $50 to avoid felony charges.
CloVIS New Mexico Aug 27 George Lancaster 20 surrendered to police after his wife Blanche B Lancaster 35 was shot to death in her apartment. Neighbors heard a shot and a scream. She died from a back shot wound with facial bruises. Lancaster a former Clovis High School football star and former NM Tech student attended Roswell and Lub b.
A tornado a cloudburst and an earthquake struck Colima today destroying many houses and flattening trees with no casualties reported. Damage followed a June Colima onslaught. Dispatches from the west said cyclonic winds battered the middle Mexican Pacific coast with Manzanillo and Acapulco reporting damage and possible loss of life.
Arrangements for the sale of a New York Stock Exchange seat were made at 168000 dollars, up 8000 from the prior transaction and 100000 above the 1932 low, signaling a stronger market level for exchange memberships.
Treasury receipts on August 25 totaled 3,485,079.08 with expenditures of 10,668,032.96 leaving a net balance of 358,880,344.73. Customs receipts for the first 25 days of August amounted to 19,615,024.13.
Democratic nominee Franklin D. Roosevelt told a Jersey City rally that Hoover and GOP leaders have evaded the prohibition issue since the war, calling their methods a failure. He referenced 1930 New York gubernatorial politics and compared the party’s split positions to riding two horses. Roosevelt spoke with Mrs. Roosevelt and two sons present.
Senator Charles Winfield Waterman of Colorado died in Washington at 71. His death leaves the Senate with 48 Democrats, 47 Republicans, and 1 Farmer-Labor senator as the balance of power for the remainder of President Hoover's term. Waterman had said he would not seek re election. His term would have ended March 4.
Amarillo merchants and The News-Globe invite the public to Amarillo’s Fall Fashion Festival. Downtown displays showcase clothing, automobiles, furniture and accessories along Polk Street. Bands perform as windows open at 5 thirty in the afternoon with proceeds toward a prosperous community parade.
Edward W. Sweet 22 of Wildorado dies after being knocked from a running board when another car rear approaches his driveway entry. He dies at Amarillo Hospital after 2:30 PM collision. England and Norway flares and beacons burned through the night as the transatlantic monoplane Green Mountain Boy vanished. Pilots Clyde Allen Lee and John Bochkon, two American bachelors, departed Harbor Grace at 5 01 A M Thursday with 37 hours of fuel. The exhausted craft likely went down at sea after surpassing the fuel limit and no word was received by press time.
Needville, Texas deputy sheriff Liz DeBravo was charged with murder and released on $5,000 bond after Leslie Boone, 25, was killed in a post office shooting. Boone had earlier been charged with disturbing the peace in Richmond. DeBravo said he fired when Boone moved toward his hip pocket after a challenge to fight.
Partly cloudy conditions with probable showers for Amarillo and west Texas on Sunday and unsettled weather with a chance of thunderstorms across north central and northwest New Mexico. Temperatures yesterday in Amarillo ranged around 68 to 82 degrees with no significant precipitation in the last 24 hours. The outlook calls for moderate temperatures with localized showers early in the week and a trend toward milder conditions toward week's end.
Roy O. Hunt of Norman Oklahoma wins the national transcontinental handicap derby finishing with 1 814 75 points after a week of cross country flying. Huffman of Cincinnati takes the junior sweepstakes on a 2300 mile eastern seaboard to midwest run with 1 199 15 points.
Lee Gelbach of Los Angeles in Bendix Trophy race to Cleveland plans a brief Amarillo refuel stop after last Thursday night in Amarillo. He expects to depart Los Angeles between 2 and 3 a.m. Monday, with Amarillo arrival roughly 7 to 9 a.m. local time, piloting a Gee Bee racer.
Akron by Art Carnahan reports plane derby action as contestants swooped past pylons and crossed the finish line. Hiden Cessna of Wichita Kans beat the 7 PM deadline to win second in his wing with 1 325.96 points, keeping his ranking intact despite a late arrival. Other money finishers include Carnahan, Mrs Grady O Donnell, and J S McDonnell. Lloyd O Donnell missed a share of the purse. Fred Dorset led the Atlantic wing with 1 041 612 points. Final tabulations from 20 precincts leave only Howard Elliott and W E Blackburn as survivors of the Potter County run-off. Howard Elliott defeats J Walker Hunter in the constable race, while W M Adams surpasses H L Gaither in the sheriff contest. Numerous county posts switch hands as voters trimmed the slate, with Sterling, Thompson, and Parrish also winning regional races. Over 8,000 total votes were cast, marking a high turnout for the county.
In Texas Democratic runoff results from August show Gov. Ross Sterling leading Miriam A Ferguson early, with Ferguson rallying to take the lead late. Final 1:30 A.M. tabulations across 233 counties list Ferguson and Sterling swapping leads, while Thompson and Hatcher contest railroad seats and Bailey, Terrell, and Strong win congressional slots.

In unofficial incomplete returns from the Panhandle districts, B L Rogers of Perryton leads for the 124th district with 4 958 votes to A Johnson 4 758 as results from six counties come in. John Puryear of Wellington leads for the 122nd district against Judge Ivy Duncan with 4 296 to 2 062 as partial tallies from Wheeler Gray Collingsworth and Donley counties. Gray has not reported definite trends yet.
Bob Barnett won the Democratic nomination for sheriff and tax collector in Randall County with 1128 votes, defeating Ben Lcudder who had 962. Incumbent John Fry did not seek re nomination. In Armstrong County T F Brunson led with 603 votes to J W Puckett's 437.
