Voters in Potter County face a tight race with three ballots and two elections on the day’s schedule as polls open at eight. Absentee voting runs strong and exemptions rise. locals expect a turnout below 1932’s level while debates center on 3.2 beer repeal, homestead exemption, home rule charter, and relief bonds.
Texans face a pivotal election on repeal of the Eighteenth Amendment and a 42 beverage sale provision. Voters also weigh a $20 million bond to aid the needy, Home Rule government changes, residential tax exemptions, and looming federal relief cuts amid a low turnout forecast.
Funeral services were planned in Plainview for Dr. Charles C. Gidney a pioneer physician and civic leader who died after two years of ill health. A former bank president he helped develop the city and partnered with Dr. J C Anderson from 1894 until Gidney became state health officer in 1926.
Miss Eugenia Roses charged with criminal assault against Cecil Smith, polo star, was dropped today. She did not appear in Evanston magistrate court. prosecutors announced no further action would be taken.
Funeral services for James McFain Sanford 69 known Panhandle cattleman and oil operator will be held at Polk Street Methodist Church at 4 PM. Rev. A L Bowman will preach with Dr L N Lipscomb assisting. Sanford died at 2118 Van Buren Street Thursday night and will lie in state at N S Griggs and Sons chapel. Interment at Llano Cemetery.

In Waco on August 25 Guy Mitchell a truck operator was convicted of murder and sentenced to 99 years for the killing of Policeman A J Thompson July 24. The jury deliberated under two hours.
In a dramatic habeas corpus ruling in Fort Worth Judge James C. Wilson ordered the transfer of Mr and Mrs R G Shannon and their son Armon to Oklahoma City where they are jailed amid heavy guards. Gus Jones led the arrest team returning Bailey to Texas pending further action.
West Texas leaders call for 75 million dollars from the federal public works fund to build a statewide highway system. At a Sweetwater meeting, road boosters and officials argued road construction best fights unemployment and funds should go to highways rather than weed cutting or minor jobs. The group urged state disaster relief be applied to roads as the primary public works project.
Walter McRae a 16 year old high school student confessed to writing a $500 extortion note sent to Dr. Tom W Brabham president of Texas Woman's College. He was arrested at home and signed a statement to Assistant District Attorney W R Parker. He called the act a joke and gave no reason. The note threatened to kidnap Brabhams 12 year old son Tom Jr if the father did not leave $500 at a city edge location.
Amarillo taxpayers ask why the public school board increased the operation budget by $13 000 and why a meeting was postponed with six days left before budget adoption. The current budget totals about $600 000 with $127 000 fixed for interest and sinking fund. The tax rate remains 90 cents. Superintendent W A McIntosh first budget requested $437 000.
Steady, soaking rain spreads across the Panhandle and South Plains, bringing half inch to one inch falls from Clarendon to Dalhart and extending to Hereford, Shamrock, Plainview, Lubbock, and Boise City areas. Isolated pockets miss the system. Past week’s showers and yesterday’s precipitation end drought conditions in most regions.
Crude oil purchasers in the Southwest push for higher prices amid expected Sept 2 base price under the federal petroleum code. Sun Oil Company of Dallas raises East Texas crude 25 cents, to 60 cents a barrel, while Humble Oil and Refining, Carter Oil, and peers lift mid-continent purchases by about 10 cents per barrel.
